For a while, it looked as though it was Rory McIlory’s destiny to write his name into the history books by claiming the 150th Open Championship but Cameron Smith had other ideas.
The Australian carded a stunning eight under par 64 to win by a shot ahead of Cameron Young, with McIlroy finishing in third.
McIlroy had his chances but it wasn’t to be on this occasion and Smith took full advantage with five successive birdies helping him to a -20 scorecard. But Rory’s each-way finish still means some profit for those who followed The Caddy’s advice and backed him at 10/1.
