IT’S been a season of twists and turns in the Scottish Premiership and the drama looks set to continue tonight with all 12 teams in action.
It looked like Celtic had left the door open for Rangers to close the gap to a point on Sunday following their 0-0 draw at Easter Road but the Gers threw away a two-goal lead at home to Motherwell, leaving the Hoops three points clear at the top.
Celtic host St Mirren tonight and home fans will be hoping for a repeat of their earlier 6-0 win over the Buddies rather than the 0-0 draw they were held to in Paisley. Of course, Saints’ manager Jim Goodwin has left for pastures new and been replaced by Stephen Robinson since then, and he’s taken over the reigns of a side that suffered their first defeat in nine against Hearts at the weekend.
Celtic’s goalless draw was the fifth time they’ve failed to score in the top flight this season and that must be a concern when they go up against teams that employ a defensive set-up against them. An early goal is often crucial and it’s no surprise that it’s been a feature of Celtic matches with 62% of their goals in the league coming in the first half.
The time of the first goal has been set at 23:00 by Bet365 at 5/6.
Plenty of punters have weighed in on Celtic corners this season but they’ve come unstuck in the last couple of games however it’s worth persevering tonight. There’s plenty of angles but if St Mirren sit in it’s unlikely they’ll win many corners at the other end so Celtic to win the -5 corner handicap should be worth taking on at 10/11.
Rangers have yet to win an away league game this calendar year and Giovanni Van Bronckhurst has some selection issues ahead of their trip to Perth with Ramsay, Davis, Jack, Diallo and Helander all expected to miss out so he’ll need to make the most of his squad.
St Johnstone are fighting for their Premiership lives but missed a huge opportunity at Dingwall on Saturday, going down 3-1 to Ross County so every match is a cup final as they try to catch up the teams above above them and at the very least keep their noses ahead of Dundee.
Goals have been a struggle for Saints for most of the season, although they have scored in five of their last six but if you fancy a Rangers win you could do worse than take the 5/6 on an away win to nil.
If St Johnstone lose it gives Dundee the chance to leapfrog them at the foot of the table but things haven’t started particulalrly well under Mark McGhee. Having played well in a 3-2 defeat at Celtic Park the dark blues were thumped 4-0 at home to Livi and need to pick themselves up for the visit of Hibs.
They’ve a poor recent record against the Hibees though and Shaun Maloney’s side are now unbeaten in three but injuries are mounting up and Kevin Nisbet’s knock at the weekend looked a serious one.
Over 2.5 Goals at even money can’t be overlooked at Fir Park since it has landed in nine of the last 10 meetings between Motherwell and Ross County. County games average a league high of 3.17 goals while Motherwell have found the net in 11 of 14 at home.
Also in Scotland Kilmarnock and Raith Rovers meet in the semi-final of the Scottish Challenge Cup and it’s a surprise to see Kille at 4/5 to win inside the 90 minutes. Raith are a bit of a shambles at the moment and definitely worth taking on at that price which would be a fair bit shorter if this was a league game.
