A day later than scheduled Napoli rock up to Ibrox tonight in search of a win that will take them top of Group A.
Both sides had contrasting fortunes on matchday 1; Rangers were soundly beaten by a rampant Ajax side, while Napoli racked up result of the week with a hugely impressive 4-1 win over Liverpool.
If this goes to form then Napoli look like a good thing at 10/11, having openend up at 3/4. But as we know Ibrox on European nights can be a daunting place, however this is a Napoli side that currently top Serie A and have made an unbeaten start to the season.
The same can’t be said of Rangers who find themselves five behind Celtic early in to the Premiership season and have struggled for form at times this season. It’ll take a mammoth effort once more to force their way back in to this group, but the Italians look like they could have too much quality.
Across the city, bookies seem to have bought in to “Angeball”. They priced up Celtic at 7/2 to defeat Real Madrid last week and have them as 6/5 favourites to win away to Shakhtar Donetsk, albeit the tie is being played at in neutral Warsaw.
Domestically the Hoops have looked untouchable but there’s not much to justify such a short price when you take in to account the Hoops’ previous European form away from home. Last season, with Postecoglou at the helm, they lost five of seven on the road, losing 17 goals and conceding two or more in all seven (one went to extra-time).
In the past 10 season of European football Celtic have kept 15 clean sheets on the road in 54 matches played, not too bad, however 13 of those have been in the qualifying stages, meaning they’ve managed just 2 clean sheets (at Rosenborg & Anderlecht) in 36 away matches in the group stages and beyond.
They’ve conceded two or more in 22 games in that period and shipped a total of 114 goals, averaging over two conceded per game.
Shakthar put four past RB Leipzig in Germany last week so they’re a team who know where the back of the net is. Former Celt Marian Shved scored twice and Hoops fans will be desperate to avoid him coming back to them after his release from the club.
The Ukranians look a bit of value at 11/5 to win or 6/4 to score two or more.
The headline writers will be keeping the back-pages free for some Erling Haaland-inspired puns tonight. The Norwegian striker looks nailed on to punish his former club when Borussia Dortmund visit the Etihad, so much so that he’s just 1/2 to find the net.
The 22 year old has a phenomenal scoring record in the Champions League and has hit the ground running at Man City with 12 goals in eight games including two hat-tricks already. He’s 7/1 to score three tonight and that really would be a headline writer’s dream.
RB Leipzig responded quickly to that 4-1 defeat to Shakhtar last week, replacing manager Domenico Tedesco with former RB Salzburg manager Marco Rose. That appears to have given the place a boost and the players responded with a 3-0 win over Dortmund at the weekend. That sets them up niucely for a trip to the Bernabeu tonight.
But Madrid are a step up in class and proved as much at Celtic Park last week. RBL should put up a good showing but Madrid coupled with AC Milan at home Dinamo Zagreb should make up a winning 21/20 Double at SBK.
