AC Milan have it all to do in their own back yard tonight if they’re to book a place in a 12th Champions League final for the club.
They trail city rivals Inter 2-0 after the first leg of their Champions League tie and that makes them 12/1 chances to turn things around and qualify tonight.
Stefano Pioli’s side suffered more anguish at the weekend, losing 2-0 again, this time to 18th placed Spezia in a surprise result that sees them remain fifth in Serie A and out of a Champions League spot for next season. That makes it just one win in five for the Rossoneri.
Inter are now five points ahead of them following their 4-2 win over Sassuolo. It’s Inter’s goal threat that should see them through this tie, they’ve scored 26 in their last eight outings (avg 3.25 per game) with the likes of Lukaku, Dzeko, Mkhitaryan and Martinez all weighing in with goals in recent weeks.
Pioli will be hoping that he’ll have move firepower at his disposal this evening, joint top scorer Rafael Leão could return to the front line after missing out on last week’s derby.
Inter, the nominated home team at the San Siro tonight, are 21/20 to underline their superiority with a win. A draw or even a one-goal defeat will still be enough but the could pick off Milan who need to go for it. That said, if things are tight going in to the final stages of the game there’s no way Simone Inzaghi’s men will go chasing a goal.
Experienced whistler Clement Turpin is the man charged with keeping a lid on the derby and the Frenchman isn’t shy at dishing out cards. He flashed 10 yellows and sent off Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel in their quarter-final clash with Manchester City. That was a fiesty affair and with so much at stake tonight it could be a similar story.
There were just two yellows last week but there’s been seven in each of the two Serie A meetings between the sides this season.
The bookings line it set high at 10/11 for Over 5.5 cards but it could pay to back Over 3.5 Second Half Cards at 20/21 as the game reaches a fraught climax, where Inter might need to turn to the dark arts of time-wasting to see the tie out.
That makes Inter ‘keeper André Onana a good condidate for a card. The Cameroon internationalist has picked up three yellows already this season and interestingly, Clement has booked two goalkeepers in his last three Champions League matches; Ederson (Man City) and Hradecky (Bayer Leverkusen). Onana is 5/1 to go into the Frenchman’s book tonight.
