The road to the group stages of the Champions League is a long one for the teams involved tonight, who are all competing for one of six places to be filled when the draw takes place on August 25th.
The Champions Path sees the likes of Dinamo Zagreb, Malmo, Midtjylland, Ludogorets and Bodo/Glimt all in action this evening.
If you’re a regular listener to the Gambla Norwegian Podcast you’ll know that Bodo/Glimt aren’t quite the same force they’ve been the last two seasons and injuries appear to have caught up with them. They limped past Faroeses opposition in the last round and although they should still be good enough to get past Linfield over two legs they could face a tricky night in Belfast tonight.
The northern Irish Champions edged past TNS of Wales in the last round but the last time they came up against Norwegian opposition they lost 0-6 on aggregate. It should be an entertaining night at Windsor Park and there could be some goals, for which the Norwegians have been famed for of late. 10 of Linfield’s last 14 two-legged European matches have seen Over 2.5 goals, which pays 4/5 tonight.
Irish champions Shamrock Rovers face a difficlut night in Razgrad against Ludogorets. The Bulgarian champions lost just once at home on their way to the title last season and easily disposed on Motenegran opposition in the last round, winning both legs.
Rovers have been grinding out results domestically and hold a healthy lead at the top of the table but this will be a big step up in class against a side who finished third in their Champions League group back in 2016-17. A home win to nil looks backable at even money.
In Scotland the League Cup matches should be approached with the usual caution. St Mirren (2/5) and St Johnstone (2/5) won’t be fancying their trips to Airdrieonians and Elgin City much, but Aberdeen should win at a canter against Stirling Albion.
The Dons have coasted through their opening two games winning each of them 2-0 and another win to nil could be on the cards at 10/11.
There’s a fascinating match between two of the SPFL’s newest kids on the block when Cove Rangers host Kelty Hearts and Dundee could be vulnerable against Billy Stark’s Queen’s Park at Ochilview although there’s been a little bit of money for the Dens Parkers who have shortened to 10/11 to pick up the three points.
Don’t miss Greg MacLean’s Bet of the Day, he’s staying in Scandanavia for a goals-based bet in Sweden’s Superettan.
