Rangers and Celtic experienced contrasting fortunes in Europe in midweek but it’s back to league business today as the Premiership season nears the final straight.
Rangers are first out the traps with a lunchtime showdown at Tannadice where they’ll be looking to set the record straight after losing there earlier in the season. Their stunning win in Dortmund on Thursday will have the place buzzing and the biggest threat to Giovanni Van Bronckhort’s side today could be complacency.
They’ll need to roll their sleeves up against a Dundee United side who have lost just once in their last seven games and even that was to an injury-time goal at Celtic Park.
Rangers have yet to win away from home in the league this calendar year but they’re likely to eke out the win here. It could be close though and it should be noted that only St Johnstone have scored fewer goals than United so a Gers win to nil at even money appeals.
Celtic were handed a timely wake-up call by Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt who brought their 17-match unbeaten run to an abrupt end. But what better way for the Hoops to bounce back than with a home match against bottom of the table Dundee?
The Bhoys have already put 10 past the Dens Park side in two games this season so it could be a long afternoon for… *checks notes*… Mark McGhee’s side.
McGhee’s appointment raised more than a few eyebrows across Scottish football this week and probably a few in the Dundee boardroom when they found out he would be suspended from the dugout for his first six matches in charge. Never a dull moment in Scottish football!
As for the betting it’s no surprise to see us focusing on Celtic corners yet again. Thursday’s Super Single for them to win Over 3 first half corners landed inside the first 15 minutes or so as the Hoops racked up another 12 in the match. They won 13 against Dundee at Celtic Park earlier in the season and another 11 on Tayside so double figures shouldn’t be beyond them once more.
Bet365 go 8/5 on Over 9 Celtic corners or the slightly safer Over 8 is even money. A repeat of the Over 3 first half corners bet is just 4/6 whereas Over 4 is 11/8.
In England the match of the day is the War of the Roses between Leeds Utd and Manchester United, a match that still retains a fierce rivalry despite the most recent disparity in the clubs’ fortunes.
Leeds have come off worst in recent meetings, conceding 15 goals in their last four meetings with the Red Devils and they come in to this one in need of a morale-boosting performance. Wins for Burnely and Watford on Saturday have made things a whole lot more interesting at the foot of the table and Marcelo Bielsa’s men, who sit 15th, are by no means safe from a relegation scrap.
Leeds surprise win at West Ham a few weeks ago and a draw with Wolves back in October are the only the points they’ve picked up against teams currently in the top eight in the table so going with that kind of form the 4/5 on a Man United win should be snapped up.
