It was an intriguing day at Euro 2020 as the second round of fixtures in the group stage were completed in some style.
Things got very intresting in Group F where France had to come from behind against Hungary to claim a point in front of a raucous 60,000-strong home crowd in Budapest.
That opened the door for both Germany and Portugal to take advantage of the French slip-up and it was Joachim Low’s side who deservedly took the three points in a thrilling 4-2 win in Munich. The hosts went off favourites but plenty of punters would’ve been sucked in by the Portuguese who now face a tough assignment in their final group match against France, where they’ll need to win to guarantee progress to the last 16.
Things didn’t get any better for punters in the last game of day as favourites Spain huffed and puffed their way to a 1-1 draw with Poland. That leaves the three-time winners on just two points and in real danger of missing out on the knock-out stages.
Italy, Netherlands and Belgium are the only three teams to have taken maximum points so far and with the likes of England, Spain and France with a bit of work to do to top their groups there’ll be plenty of Group Accas hanging by a thread.
On to Sunday and the completion of Group A; Italy and Wales will battle it out for top spot in Rome while Switzerland and Turkey look set to battle it out for a third place finish and the potential of progression to the next round.
The Swiss can still finish second but it’ll require a three point and 5-goal swing in their favour over the Welsh.
Robert Page’s side will have a tough task on their hands agains the Italians who have aguably been the most impressive side at Euro 2020 so far. The Azzuri have real momentum on their side and Roberto Mancini will be desperate to keep the ball rolling but there are suggestions he’ll make five or six changes which makes this a much trickier betting proposition.
The Italians are 1/2 to win and few could argue considering their current 29 match unbeaten run, but it’s a game where a draw will do for both sides and at 11/4 that might just be the best bet.
2,000 miles away in Baku, Turkey will enjoy the majority of the home support once more and after a hugely disappointing campaign so far will be desperate to salvage some pride if not sneak in to the knock-out stages on three points. It would take almighty turnaround and no little luck elsewhere to see them make the last 16 from here. A win would see them finish the group on three points but they’d need to make a serious dent in that -5 goal difference to be in with a shout of being one of the four teams to qualify in third place.
4/1 looks a huge price for Turkey, who were considered dark horses by many pre-tournament. The Swiss haven’t exactly ripped up any trees in their matches so in a three horse, with a point to prove and an army of fans behind them the Crescent-Stars can’t be ignored at that price.
