It’s really tempting to get drawn in to friendlies at this time of the year, after all, who could resist Bedfont Sports v Potters Bar Town (12.00pm KO in case you’re interested)?
But keeping your discipline is as important at this stage of pre-season as it is at any time when the real stuff is back. Unless of course you have some inside info! Squads are in a state if flux at the moment as new players and indeed new managers settle in so the best advice to leave the warm-up matches well alone for now.
Over in Ireland Sligo Rovers v Shelbourne is the weekend’s remaining fixture from the top flight and there could be a case to be made for the visitors at 5/2.
Sligo sit two places above and four points ahead of Shels but have played a game more so there’s not much between them in the table.
Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that five of Sligo’s seven wins have come against just two clubs; three versus 9th place Finn Harps and two versus 8th place Drogheda. To be fair they’ve racked up eight draws too, but they’ve lost both meetings with Shelbourne so far this season.
As well as winning The Showgrounds back in April, Shelbourne have also won on the road at 3rd placed Derry (one of only two teams to do so) and 4th placed St Pats.
Admittedly, recent form does favour Rovers here but we can keep the draw on our side by back Shelbourne in the Asian Handicap market +0.0/0.5 at just under evens (1.950).
Over in Norway Bodo/Glimt can move in to third spot, even if it is just overnight. They face a near 1600-mile journey to Skein and back, to play Odd Grenland, a trip they’ve rarely enjoyed in recent seasons. In fact they’ve won just once in their last five visits to the the Skagerak Arena so backers beware.
8/11 feels a little in the skinny side for the defending champions who have struggled to hit top gear this term, however Odd have lost their last four at home and Glimt cannot afford to fall any further behind title rivals Molde, and league leaders Lillestrom.
An alternative angle could be a clean sheet for the visitors. They’ve not conceded in their last four in all competition while the hosts have scored just 11 goals in 12 league games this season. It’s 7/4 for Bodo/Glimt to shut-out Odd.
