AFTER a near two-week break the Premier League returns at Anfield at lunchtime and a win for Liverpool over Watford would take them top of the table.
The Reds have hit top form at the right time of the season and it’s three months to the day since they last dropped league points. They love a visit from the Hornets too and have scored 18 in their last four clashes on Merseyside.
Roy Hodgson’s side grabbed themselves a lifeline with a 2-1 win over Southampton last time out but they’ve failed to take a single point against teams in the top five, in fact their four points gained against Man Utd are the only ones they’ve collected against top eight sides.
There’s no danger of anything other than a Liverpool win (1/7) and they should enjoy the lion’s share of possession. Looking at recent home matches against teams in the lower reaches of the league Liverpool have managed a glut of shots and shots on target;
- 3-0 v Brentford: 27 shots, 13 shots on target
- 6-0 v Liverpool: 23 shots, 15 shots on target
- 3-1 v Liverpool: 29 shots, 8 shots on target
With that in mind both Over 7.5 shots on target (evens) and Over 20.5 shots (4/5) look promising.
Man City have hit 17 without reply in their last five meetings with Burnley and it’s now 32-1 in nine consecutive wins for the Citizens. Compared to the 1/5 on offer for a straight City victory, another win to nil pays an attractive 5/6.
There’s not much to choose between the sides at Molineux where Wolves and Aston Villa meet. The bookies might have over-reacted to Wolves’ collapse against Leeds last time out when they lost a two-goal lead after being reduced to 10 men. Although the loss of Ruben Neves (injury) and Raul Jimenez (suspension) will be keenly felt.
Villa have lost 10 of their 12 games against the teams above them in the table so far this season which makes the 19/10 available on the home win look a bit of value, as does the even money on Wolves Draw No Bet.
In the Scottish Premiership there’s something riding on every game. Dundee and Aberdeen are both desperate for points; for Dundee it’s about staying in the top flight, for the Dons the chance to salvage a top six finish from an abysmal season.
Aberdeen’s record against the Dark Blues is tremendous and they can take advantage of the apathy surrounding Dens Park following the appointment and subsequent performances under Mark McGhee. Back Aberdeen to win at 21/20.
Hearts could have one eye on two upcoming Edinburgh Derbies on their trip to Ross County. One, of course, is in the Scottish Cup semi-final and with third place all but mathematically secured they could be forgiven for prioritising the chance to win some silverware. That’s not to say Robbie Neilson will rest players in Dingwall but Ross County would be well placed to capitalise on any complacency.
County are still in the mix for a top six place and have lost just one of their last 10 at home – that to a last gasp winner against Celtic. A Staggies win looks over-priced at 16/5.
Dundee Utd could also be worth a punt at Easter Road at 7/2. Shaun Maloney’s side are struggling for goals and pinning their hopes on 19-year-old former Bodo/Glimt striker Elias Melkersen. United won 3-0 here back in October and know that a win will all but secure that top six spot. Hibs can’t be trusted at home, especially at odds-on.
Airdrie blew the chance to close the gap on Cove Rangers last weekend, conceding a 94th minute equalizer to their title rivals but it’s now 16 without defeat in League One for the Diamonds and they look a solid bet at 10/11 to see off bottom of the table East Fife.
