The traditional season curtain-raiser doesn’t often provide many pointers for the season ahead but since it’s the two Premier League favourites that’ll contest the Community Shield today we might get a little insight in to how this season will shape up.
Just one point separated the sides last season and it could be just as close once more. City hope the addition of Erling Haaland will take them to the next level and you wouldn’t put it past the prolific Norwegian to make his bow in English football with a goal at 20/21.
Less than 24 hours before the Scottish Premiership even starts we had our first managerial casualty as Graham Alexander was shown the door at Fir Park. A European exit to Sligo Rovers was the last straw following a run of just three wins in 23 for the Steelmen.
There are a few other managers in the top flight who might be nervously looking over their shoulder. Two of them meet at McDiarmid Park where St Johnstone welcome Hibs.
Callum Davidson and Lee Johnson could’ve both done with a good start to the season but neither even finished in the top two of their respective League Cup groups. The Hibees look better equipped for the season ahead and are tempeting to win at 11/8. Their not a team we can trust however so taking a little bit of insurance on the Asian Handicap (0.0, -0.5) at 2.025 makes more appeal.
Rangers should get their season off to a winning start at Livingston who have scored just once in their last 10 meetings with the Ibrox side. A Gers win to nil pays a tidy 6/5.
Peterhead look likely to struggle in League One this season. Four group games in the League Cup led to four defeats, conceding 13 and failing to score which doesn’t bode well. Today they host an Airdrieonians side who were one of the unlucky teams to finish second in their group but were still eliminated.
The Diamonds will fancy their chances of getting in amongst it alongside Falkirk, Dunfermline and Queen of the South this season and should start with a victory which pays 10/11, as does over 1.5 team goals. Peterhead’s lack of prowess in front of goal could see one goal as enough for the Diamonds so the outright win just edges it.
League One favourites Falkirk have made a shrewd appointment in experienced manager John McGlynn. He’s been round the block a few times and will hopefully bring some stability to the club. He’s made a solid start, topping thier League Cup group at the expense of Hibs and Morton.
It’s vital that they get their league campaign off to winning start against a tricky Montrose side and interestingly they’ve been on the drift a little, now standing at 23/20 to win. The Bairns only scored three goals in their four League Cup game so this could be another low-scorer so back the home win in this one.
Listening to the boys on the Gambla Norwegian Football Podcast has convinced that Bodo/Glimt look a good bet today in Norway. They’ve scored 13 in their last two and love games against today’s opponents Aalesund against whom they’ve scored 18 in their last four matches. At 7/10 they’re good acca material.
