As predicted the full UK football fixture card has been postponed this weekend in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s II’s passing.
The football authorities’ decision didn’t go down well with a lot of fans though, especially in light of several other sporting and entertainment events going ahead. Racing was also put on hold until Sunday but cricket, rugby union and the Great North Run will all go ahead.
That means we’re turning to Europe this weekend for our bets.
Maccathered made an excellent point in the comments section of yesterday’s thread when he warned members to be wary of backing teams involved in the UEFA competitions this week. The winter World Cup means there’s a squeeze on the fixture list and this midweek matchday two follows hot on the heels of the opening matchday of last week. That means some teams with smalled squads might prioritise their European game this week over domestic matches this weekend. Beware.
With a trip to Anfield on the horizon you might think Ajax could be forgiven for taking their eye off the ball this weekend but their guests today are Heerenveen and Amsterdam club have a great record in this fixture. You have to go back to 2009, 28 competitive games ago, for a Heerenveen win in this fixture. No surprise then that Ajax are 2/11 to win.
They were excellent in their 4-0 win over Rangers on Wednesday and they scored 17 and conceded just one in their last five. This should be a routine home win and 8/13 on Ajax/Ajax in the half-time/full-time market is about as good as it gets price-wise.
Another big gun who have a straight-forward looking fixture this weekend are FC Porto. The Portuguese side thought they’d snatched a point at Atletico when they equalised in a dramtic period of added time, only to concede with virtually the last kick of the ball to go down 2-1.
This week they host Club Brugge but today’s visitors are Chaves who have conceded three or more in five of the last six meetings between the sides. A repeat pays 4/5.
AC Milan took the spoils in the derby last weekend with a 3-2 win over Inter and they could go top of Serie A with a win at Sampdoria. The hosts are winless after five and sit third from bottom so this will be a game Milan will be targeting for three points.
They’ve won the last two meetings by a single goal to nil and it could be another low-scorer this evening. Samp have managed just two goals so one might be enough for Milan to take all three points. An away win combined with under 4 goals pays 6/5.
In the absence of UK football you should also give this week’s Gambla Podcast a listen where Norway’s top two leagues are under the microscope with Greg Browning, David Weatherston and Selectabet.
