A huge week of European football lies ahead as the three UEFA competitions make their return but the week begins with some unfinished business in the Scottish Cup and English Championship.
Peterhead and Dundee vie to become the final team to enter the quarter-final draw, which will be made after tonight’s clash at Balmoor Stadium.
The Dark Blues notched an unexpected win at Hearts in midweek and all of a sudden their chances of survival in the Premiership look a little brighter. James McPake will be aiming to build on that victory with a comfortable win over the League One strugglers this evening.
Peterhead, managed by Scotland’s longest-serving boss, Jim McInally (10 years, 129 days), eked past Lowland League side East Kilbride in the last round but that’s been one of few highlights for the Blue Toon the last few months when they’ve won just two of their last 12 league matches.
The Dens Park side should ease through to the last-eight at 3/5 and adding them to score two or more in the process makes for a 21/20 BetBuilder.
It doesn’t feel that long ago that West Brom were topping the Championship table but a spectacular loss of form has seen them slip to ninth and battling just to make the play-offs. Gone is Valérien Ismaël, replaced by managerial-merry-go-round veteran Steve Bruce for the 12th gig of his career. (10 points if you can name all the other 10 clubs he’s managed – he had two spells at one of them! *See end of post)
Bruce’s tenure started with a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United to make it just one win in nine for the Baggies so there was no immediate new-manager bounce.
Tonight’s opponents Blackburn appeared to be heading in the opposite direction and were up in to second in the table a matter of weeks ago. But a run of three games without a win (D1 L2) has allowed Bournemouth to open up a five-point gap on them and force Rovers in to third.
Tony Mowbray’s side need to regain that momentum and look a bit over-priced at 7/2 to do so at the Hawthorns based on the recent form of both sides and they could make it an uncomfortable bow for Bruce in front of the home fans.
