Unless you have been on another planet, one with Covid and a million other problems you will know its Grand National weekend, and the National is the 2nd leg of the Spring Double bet.
It’s a funny one, Cheltenham Festival hype slowly reaches it crescendo over weeks and months. The Grand National build-up consists of a frenetic and often chaotic week.
The old ‘Spring Double’ bet
If you are of a certain vintage, in other words 45+ like me, you will recall the term ‘spring double’ bet which was the term for identifying and obviously backing the winners of the National and Lincoln.
It’s not bounded around like it once was but if anyone has been bold enough to double-up the 2021 Lincoln winner Haqeeqy with a national horse we wish you the very best of luck.
Haqeeqy was trained by John Gosden and his son Thady who is now given credit on the race-card. I spoke about their chances in the 2021 Trainer’s Championship in last week’s blog where I also highlighted Sir Michael Stoute’s current residence – in the wilderness.

Stoute’s the Man to Follow
My timing regarding the Michael Stoute comments was ironic. OK, none of the four winners the trainer turned out on Wednesday are going to win a classic but having four winners from five runners on any day is a great achievement. In fact, with seven of his last 10 runners scoring, Sir Michael Stoute’s yard is one which you should follow carefully in the coming weeks.
For your information he has two entered in a novice stakes (2.40pm) at Windsor on Monday and another that evening at Wolverhampton in the 7.20pm.

Derg Can Swim with the Big Boys
Will we see the 2021 Derby winner this weekend? According to the history books there is a very good chance. The Ballysax Stakes, due off at 3.45pm at Leopardstown on Sunday, was famously won by Galileo 20 years ago and High Chaparral 12 months later. In 2016 Harzand was another horse who took this race before scoring at Epsom.
He may appear to be the stable’s second string but I’ve a strong fancy for the once-raced Lough Derg on Sunday who might be able to emulate his sire, Galileo.
That one victory came at the expense of Colour Sergeant who has franked the form since beating an Aidan O’Brien hot-pot, Modus Operandi, at Cork earlier this week. They pulled six lengths clear of the third horse here.
Top Tip: Lough Derg (3.45pm Leopardstown Sunday) at 7/1 with Betfair Sportsbook
