Thistle look like they’ve got it in the bag ahead of their return leg in the Scottish Premiership play-offs tonight but long-suffering Jags fans know better than to count their chickens.
Kris Doolan’s side dominated proceedings at Firhill last Friday and could easily have put the tie to bed. In the end the 3-0 scoreline flattered Ayr United who were notably without top scorer and Championship Player Of the Year, Dipo Akinyemi.
The 20-goal striker is expected to return to the starting line-up tonight following a bug that ran through the squad and he’s 9/2 to lead the charge with the opening goal this evening.
Thistle only need to look down south for a warning of what can happen in these play-offs. Only last week Sheffield Wednesday overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit to win a remarkable match on penalties and that will no doubt feature in Doolan’s pre-match pep talk.
McBookie have chalked up Lee Bullen’s side as 16/1 shots to complete the comeback and qualify.
To do so Ayr would need to score at least three goals, something they’ve done on 10 occasions this season including a 4-2 win over tonight’s visitors back in October. 3+ goals for the home side pays 7/2 and a more modest 2+ goals pays even money.
Lee Bullen’s side’s biggest challenge could be keeping the free-scoring Thistle out at the other end. Brian Graham and co have scored 27 in their last nine outings and will feel that a goal tonight could put the tie beyond Ayr.
Over 2.5 Goals pays 3/4 whilst BTTS is 4/6 at Bet365.
There’s no doubt Ayr will give it a right good go tonight and the Akinyemi factor could be key. 13/10 on the home win looks attractive but more appealing is the 1/1 on them finding the net twice or more in what could be a nail-biter at Somerset Park.
