Wimbledon 2022 Betting Preview: Novak Djokovic & Iga Swiatek Go Into Wimbledon 2022 as Worthy Favourites

23/06/2022 admin

The Wimbledon championship, the third Grand Slam of the year, will be held at the All England Club in Wimbledon between Monday 27 June 27 and Sunday 10 July. Here’s our rundown of the leading contenders with betting odds and our Wimbledon 2022 betting predictions.

Following the decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from this summer’s Championships after the invasion of Ukraine, Wimbledon has been stripped of its ATP and WTA ranking points, which could see some players opting against competing.

The defending Men’s champion is Novak Djokovic, beating the Italian Matteo Berrettini 6–7 (4–7), 6–4, 6–4, 6–3. It was Djokovic’s 20th Grand Slam Men’s Singles title and his sixth Wimbledon title. With the 2020 tournament having been cancelled due to Covid, the Serb will be looking for a fourth consecutive title at SW19.

It’s no surprise to see Djokovic as a very warm favourite to retain his title at odds of 1/1 with Betway.

The ban on the Russian players does mean that Daniil Medvedev won’t be at Wimbledon while, at the time of writing, Rafael Nadal isn’t a definite attendee, having an ongoing issue with a chronic foot injury. The 36-year-old Spaniard has just claimed a 14th French Open title and a 22nd Grand Slam title overall, but he looks a bit of a risky bet at Wimbledon 2022 at 7/1 with William Hill.

The second favourite as things stand is another Spaniard. The 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is just setting out on his career, but he’s already making giant strides in the game. He’s rated a 6/1 chance to win the Men’s title, but Alcaraz has precious little history on grass courts, so those odds look too short for now.

Next up in the betting is Matteo Berrettini at 10/1 with BoyleSports. Berrettini hasn’t had a great 2022 to date, but he’s been a very strong performer on grass over the past few years.

Alexander Zverev is rated a 12/1 chance with William Hill. The 25-year-old German impressed at the French Open before having to retire in his semi-final with Nadal with what looked like a serious injury. His participation at Wimbledon looks far from certain and his record on grass is nothing special either.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is on offer at odds of 14/1 with BoyleSports. The 23-year-old Greek player has a very modest record on grass to date, so is another who looks worth swerving in terms of backing for the title.

The 21-year-old Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime is a rising star in the game and can boast a very decent record on grass. At 14/1 with Betway, he could represent some each-way value.

Other names that could be of interest are the Pole, Hubert Hurkacz, at 25/1 with Betfair, another talented young Canadian in the 23-year-old Denis Shapovalov at 25/1 with BoyleSports and the Australian bad boy of tennis, Nick Kyrgios, another at 25/1 with BoyleSports.

The 33-year-old Croat veteran Marin Cilic will have his backers at 30/1 with William Hill, particularly after an impressive run to the semi-final stage in Pari, plus his impressive record on grass.

For patriotic punters, Andy Murray is 50/1 with Betway, while Cameron Norrie is a 66/1 shot with BoyleSports.

Wimbledon Ladies Championship Preview

The Ladies’ champion in 2021 was Ashleigh Barty, who defeated Karolína Plíšková, 6–3, 6–7 (4–7), 6–3. However, Barty surprisingly retired after winning the Australian Open in her homeland earlier this year, so won’t be back to defend her title.

That leaves the Pole, Iga Swiatek, as the clear favourite for the title at 2/1 with Betway. Swiatek has limited grass court experience, but she is currently on a record-equalling run of 35 consecutive winning matches, culminating in her 6-1 6-3 French Open final victory over Coco Gauff.

Having indicated that she was leaning towards not participating, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka does have her name on the entry list for Wimbledon. Despite the uncertainty, the Japanese player is the joint-second favourite at 12/1 with BoyleSports. It doesn’t look the most appealing bet under the circumstances.

Also at 12/1 is Simona Halep. The 30-year-old Romanian won Wimbledon in 2019 and has a decent record on the grass surface, so certainly shouldn’t be discounted.

Next up is the aforementioned. Coco Gauff at 14/1 with William Hill. The American only turned 18 in March, but has already reached the 4th round at Wimbledon on two previous occasions and has an excellent record on grass.

Can Emma show some bouncebackability?

Britain’s 19-year-old Emma Raducanu is on offer at odds of 15/1 with William Hill. Raducanu reached the 4th round at Wimbledon last year, before going on to win the US Open title in spectacular fashion. However, her form since has been very indifferent and she’s already had a couple of coaching changes since her Grand Slam triumph.

Karolina Plíšková, last year’s runner-up, is 20/1 with BoyleSports. The 30-year-old Czech player has reached the semi-final stage or beyond in all four Grand Slam events, but has yet to secure a title.

Fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova is also on offer at 20/1 with Betfair, but looks an unlikely candidate on this surface.
The 21-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu is 20/1 with BoyleSports, but injuries have curtailed her progress since an outstanding 2019 season.

Other players who will have their supporters include Spain’s Paula Badosa at 20/1 with BoyleSports, her countrywoman and 2017 Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza at 25/1 with BoyleSports, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur is also deemed a 25/1 chance with 888sport. Jabeur was a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year and has a fine record on grass (including a title at the Birmingham Classic last year), so looks a potential threat.

The 25-year-old Swiss player Belinda Bencic is another available at 25/1 with BoyleSports. Bencic has yet to progress beyond the 4th round at Wimbledon, but she has a solid grass court record.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari can be backed at 25/1 with Betway, but the 26-year-old has never been beyond the 3rd round in five previous attempts in SW19.

Petra Kvitova is 25/1 with William Hill. Wimbledon champion in 2011 and 2014, the Czech player is now 32 and hasn’t had the best 2022 to date. At the same odds of 25/1 with 888sport is the 34-year-old German Angelique Kerber. Wimbledon champion in 2018, Kerber is a fine player on grass. It would seem unlikely that she can go all the way on this occasion though.

Jelena Ostapenko can be backed at odds of 33/1 with 888sport. The 24-year-old Latvian was a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2018, a former Wimbledon Junior champion and has a solid record on grass. A potential outsider for the title.
