Do the Wolves show Champions League level?
The north of the country is only thinly represented in the Bundesliga at the moment. With Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg, there are currently only two northern clubs in the German top flight. That’s why the only northern derby in the league is on the agenda on Saturday, when the Wolves make the short trip to the Weser.
The VfL likes to be guests in Bremen. Against no other club did Wolfsburg celebrate more away wins and score more goals in the Bundesliga. The odds comparison of AFT casts the Wolves as favorites in this match, among other reasons, especially since the Lower Saxons have also been in very good form in recent weeks and picked up many points.
The Wolves are in third place in the Bundesliga table and have a six-point cushion on fifth place. Oliver Glasner’s team is on course for the Champions League.
Bremen are in twelfth place with 30 points and thus probably in a secure midfield position. Relegation should no longer be an issue. So, Florian Kohfeldt’s team can now play freely. Werder has also been in good form recently, but shows the fewest sprints league-wide, while VfL is the most diligent in this category. Therefore, the first tendency between Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg goes to a tip on the guests.
Prediction & Live Odds for Werder vs. Wolfsburg 20/03/2021 – 1X
VfL Wolfsburg plays consistently well and gets a lot of wins with a very stable defense. In the last eleven Bundesliga games there was only one defeat. In eight of the last nine games, there was no goal conceded. Therefore, the Lower Saxony must certainly be treated as the favorite on Saturday.
However, the Bremen are also in a good mood and have lost only one of the last four games. Especially against Bayern, you always have to expect a defeat. Overall, however, Werder have been very stable in recent weeks and are largely free of all relegation worries. Therefore, we can imagine that there will be at least a point win for the Bremen team (1X).
Werder Bremen – Statistics & Current Form
Werder Bremen is certainly playing a decent season and on Saturday with one point can already reach the 31 points that the SVW has scored in the entire last season. However, a tough week for the Werderaner now follows, because with Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Dortmund, the eleven of Florian Kohfeldt has four opponents before the chest, against which there were four defeats in the Hinrunde.
Bremen with only one defeat in four games
However, since the relegation battle is no longer a real issue, at least at the moment, Bremen can play freely. In the past four games there was only one defeat and this was to be expected against FC Bayern. In this condition, between Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg, the odds on a point win for the home side may be interesting.
However, last weekend the Bremen side were found too easy at home against Bayern. The Munich dominated the game and led at the Weserstadion already clear 3-0. Only when the league leader took the tempo a little out of the game, Werder came in the shooting phase after a tap-in by Niclas Füllkrug still to the 1:3 honorary goal.
In terms of personnel, things are looking pretty good for the Bremen side. Ilia Gruev and Luca Plogmann are the only two players on the injured list in the Bundesliga. However, there is still a question mark behind Leonardo Bittencourt due to back problems. In addition, Marco Friedl returns to the back line after serving his yellow ban.
Predicted lineup of Werder Bremen:
Pavlenka – Groß, Toprak, Friedl – Gebre Selassie, Augustinsson, Möhwald, Eggestein – Sargent, Rashica – Füllkrug
Wolfsburg – statistics & current form
Just like the Bremen side, Wolfsburg can already crack the points mark for the whole of last season on this matchday. A guarantor that this is now already the case is Wout Weghorst. The striker has 16 goals to his name this season and scored a total of 49 goals in the Bundesliga. In the northern derby, the Dutchman could celebrate his personal goal anniversary.
Wolfsburg stronghold
The Wolves are in outstanding shape. Wolfsburg lost only one of the last eleven Bundesliga games and did not concede a goal eight times in the last nine games. That could be a clue to predicting sub-par goals between Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg, or that both teams won’t score.
Last Saturday, VfL was served a home win on a silver platter. FC Schalke once again proved to be uncompetitive. In the end, the Lower Saxons shot the designated relegated team out of the stadium with 5:0. An own goal by the Schalkers opened the scoring. Wout Weghorst, Ridle Baku, Josip Brekalo and Maximilian Philipp added the other goals.
On Saturday, Xaver Schlager and Maxence Lacroix, two regulars, will return to the starting eleven after suspensions. However, Jerome Roussillon and Kevin Mbabu will be out with injuries. The injured Marin Pongracic and Renato Steffen will certainly not be involved. In addition, Paulo Otavio must continue to serve his red suspension.
Expected lineup of Wolfsburg:
Casteels – Mbabu, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon – Schlager, Arnold – Baku, Gerhardt, Brekalo – Weghorst
