York City v Solihull Moors
Saturday, 3pm
When you think of York City this season, goals shouldn’t be too far away from the conversation! It has been a tough season to date as they sit just above the relegation zone, however a chance of manager recently has given them hope of a more productive campaign. Neal Ardley is still imposing his methods and tactics onto his inherited squad, but it hasn’t stopped the goals coming or going for now.
They take on a Solihull Moors outfit this weekend that is in fine fettle and once again looking like mounting a serious push for promotion. They are the only unbeaten team remaining in National League, and at the very least they’d expect for that to be the case following this weekend’s trip to York. Impressively, they’ve won five of their six on their travels, including eye-catching victories at Hartlepool and Oldham.
An average of 3.67 goals have been and gone in York home matches this season, and there is no reason to not suspect another exciting contest on Saturday. Ardley’s side lost 4-2 at home to another likely promotion candidate in the form of York in midweek, and being an offensive coach he isn’t going to suddenly get his side sitting back too much, especially at home.
It could be argued that Solihull will form their toughest test so far, but it is still one they’ll relish in front of their passionate fan base. The visitors won’t necessarily be looking forward to the trip to York Communication Stadium, mainly because it fits perfectly into the banana skin territory. Law of averages would also suggest Solihull will lose eventually, maybe this could be the weekend?
Over 2.5 Goals has to form the first part of our weekend acca. Although Solihull games haven’t beaten this figure too often, the presence of York will make this quite an open match.
Blackburn v Leicester
Sunday, 12pm
Your Sunday lunchtime viewing comes from the Championship when Blackburn welcomes Leicester to Ewood Park, a game which was a regular Premier League affair not so long ago. Both clubs will harbour ambitions of returning to the big league next year, and the way Leicester have gone about their early season displays then it looks a foregone conclusion. Blackburn remain inconsistent, but more than capable of defeating anyone on their day, especially at home.
Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has suggested that the sheer fact the team is quite young is one obvious reason for their in and out performances. They are one of only three teams, along with Sunderland and Leeds, that have named an average XI across the season below the age of 24. One big issue is when they face in-form teams such as Leicester this season as they’ve lost all three seasons meetings which clubs positioned 5th or above.
Leicester did have a trip to Anfield in the Carabao Cup to contend with in midweek, but it was quite a rotated side named by Enzo Maresca, meaning freshness isn’t a huge concern heading into this weekend, even more so with this match being on Sunday and not Saturday. They’ll look to continue from where they left off in league action in Lancashire. It is seven wins from eight in the Championship, with only Hull managing to defeat them.
Another concern for Blackburn comes around their offensive options with Sam Gallagher and Niall Ennis being out of action in the striker department, whilst Ryan Hedges has also now been ruled out long-term. Semir Telalovic is also still settling into the club, and 20-year-old Harry Leonard is another still learning his trade. They’ll come up against a Leicester side that has conceded only five league goals so far. Whilst their xGA suggests they should’ve conceded three goals more, it is still amongst the strongest defensive numbers in the league.
You can never be too confident in the Championship but all roads really are leading to another Leicester win here. I just fear for Blackburn against this calibre of opponent, even more so knowing they are lacking a bit of bite in attack, and the same just cannot be said of Leicester.
A Leicester victory forms the second part of our weekend acca.
Hvidovre v Brondby
Sunday, 3pm
One interesting match in the Danish Superliga stands out on the Sunday card and that comes at Pro Ventilation Arena when newly-promoted Hvidovre welcomes one of the biggest clubs in the country in Brondby. It would be fair to say it has been a difficult transition for Hvidovre playing in the top flight as they sit bottom of the table and winless all season. Brondby, on the other hand, are challenging near the top, heading into this weekend only four points off leaders FC Copenhagen, who they narrowly lost to last weekend.
On the back of that loss to their big rivals, it is important Brondby swiftly get back to winning ways in this type of game. They are big favourites, but playing away from home does make it that little bit more complicated, potentially. Brondby have actually won four of their five matches on the road, the only setback coming away to Nordsjaelland, who themselves are undefeated at home. Victories at the likes of Midtjylland, Silkeborg and Aarhus, all in the top six, suggests they should be beating Hvidovre with ease.
That is reflected in the odds, mainly due to Hvidovre not really approaching their games with any real authority. There is a ‘rabbits in the headlights’ kind of feeling around them. Every game has the feeling of a cup tie where they are playing like a team from a division or two below. Clearly they have limitations, reflected by scoring only three goals all season, and their aim is to sit back and be tough to break down. That worked when unexpectedly drawing at Nordsjaelland last time out, but playing at home they have to be more open, and that does not suit them at all.
It is four defeats from four at home, scoring just once in the process. Defeats to Odense (5-1) and Lyngby (1-0) will be the scores that hurt the most, as their other home losses came to higher quality opponents. Brondby are in that category, and I just don’t see how they are going to cause any real damage. Brondby will be up for this too having lost last weekend, so the chance of them taking the opposition lightly is vastly decreased.
A Brondby win has to be on the acca, and it completes our treble.
