Manchester United and Newcastle United booked their places in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, now it’s the turn of another four Premier League clubs vying for the season’s first piece of silverware.
Both Nottingham Forest and Wolves‘ principal aim this season will be survival in the top flight but after tonight one of them will be just a two-legged semi-final away from a day out at Wembley.
Julen Lopetegui appears to be making an impact at Wolves despite a tough start. Most had written off their chances at Anfield on Saturday but a spirited display saw them force an FA Cup replay. His only defeats have come against Arsenal and Manchester United but his fixtures don’t get much easier in the coming weeks with Manchester City and Liverpool on the horizon.
Forest’s 4-1 defeat at Blackpool on Saturday underlined a lack of strength in depth at the City Ground and they could be vulnerable tonight again.
Wolves have won four of the last five meetings including a 1-0 win at Molineux in October. It could be another close one tonight which the visitors could just shade it at 9/5.
There appears to be little chance of an upset in tonight’s other semi-final at St Mary’s where Southampton host Manchester City.
Having only won the League Cup twice in the 52 years until 2013, City have now lifted the trophy eight times, six of those triumphs coming in the last nine seasons.
Their match-by-match record in the competition is phenomenal. They’ve lost just four games from the last 43 in the competition and two of those were in one of a two-legged semi-final which they eventually won on aggregate. It’s no wonder they’re just 1/5 to win tonight.
It should be comfortable win for the away side and at those odds a game best left alone.
Owen Coyle’s Queen’s Park are riding the crest of a wave at the moment. Six wins in a row in the league has put them top of the Championship, four points clear. Cup wins over Peterhead and Montrose make it eight wins on the bounce and they’re scoring for fun too. The Spiders have found the net 30 times in those eight wins and have a Scottish Challenge Cup semi-final in their sights tonight.
Standing in their way are Raith Rovers, themselves on a run of five without defeat (W1 D4) but if form is anything to go by then Coyle’s side look a good shout at 17/20.
