Last night’s internationals signalled the end of the 2022-23 season and a well earned rest for players across Europe but spare a thought for the 16 squads representing their nations at the U21 European Championships which kick off today in Georgia and Romania.
Germany and Spain have dominated the tournament recently, winning six of the last seven editions between them (3 apiece) and racking up 10 semi-final appearances.
No great surprise then to see them top the betting markets with the Spaniards leading the way at 9/2 and the Germans at 5/1 alongside France.
England (6/1) meet Germany next Wednesday in Group C in what could be a match to decide who tops the section.
The Three Lions’ squad includes a few household names from the Premier League such as Arsenal’s Emile Smith-Rowe, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliot and £40m Anthony Gordon who moved from Everton to Newcastle in January.
Their campaign kicks-off tomorrow against Czech Republic but there are eight teams in action to get the tournament started today.
Spain are 2/7 favs against Romania who qualified as hosts and if their previous record is anything to go by should get off to a winning start.
Likewise Portugal, who are 2/5 to beat Georgia in their capital city, Tblisi. The Portuguese will be without the top scorer during qualification, Gonçalo Ramos, but should be good enough to get the job done.
A straightforward Iberian double pays 4/5.
