There was much hope and confidence swirling around Ibrox ahead of the start of the of the season. A raft of new faces had been signed by Michael Beale, who’s honeymoon period was still in flow despite failing to stop Celtic securing another Treble, but it came to an abrupt end when the talking stopped and the real football started at the weekend.
A 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock was a huge reality check for the Gers and perhaps a timely one ahead of a crucial run of European matches. They’ve plenty of time to recover in the SPFL Premiership but there are few second chances when walking the Champions League qualification tightrope.
The good news for Beale is that is was the less-fancied Servette who prevailed against Genk last week and at some expense to their squad.
It’s been reported that the Swiss could be without the services of seven players including captain and regular goalkeeper Jeremy Frick, as well as striker Enzo Crivelli who was sent off in last week’s triumph over the Belgians.
The Gers have saved some of their best performances for Europe in recent seasons, this time last year they disposed of Union Saint-Gilloise in a thrilling 3-0 2nd leg comeback at Ibrox, before knocking out PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round.
PSV potentially lie in wait once more but for now it’s all about securing a good first leg win. Fans will be expecting a reaction after Saturday’s dismal display and we should see a straightforward victory for Beale’s men.
Servette finished a distant second the Swiss Super League to Young Boys and should be out of their depth in the cauldron of Ibrox so a comfortable first leg win shouldn’t be beyond the Gers.
The home win is 8/15 but goals make more appeal. You can double up the win with over 1.5 Rangers goals at 4/5 but being a bit more adventurous and taking over 2.5 goals for the home side pays a tasty 17/10.
Last night’s EFL Cup was a bit of a binfire for punters so it’s probably best approached with caution. The Leeds / Leceister Double will be popular at around 6/5 but there’s already been enough surprise results to avoid getting too heavily involved.
