Tonight’s Champions League ties look like dead rubbers with Manchester City and Inter Milan both in commanding positions after the first legs.
Inter look certain to set-up a mouth-watering semi-final tie with rivals AC Milan following their 2-1 aggregate win onver Napoli last night. I Nerazzurri hold a 2-0 lead over Benfica thanks to goals from Barella and Lukaku and it would be a major surprise if the Portuguese can overturn that deficit and qualify at 10/1.
They have already won in Italy this season however, defeating Juventus in Turin back in September, and if they can get an early goal it might spook Simone Inzaghi’s side who’s only win in their last eight was the win in Lisbon last week. That run which extends to five defeats in their last seven Serie A matches has seen them slip to fifth in the table and out of the Champions League positions.
However, after being unable to overcome Inter’s defensive masterclass last week in front of their own fans it’s unlikely Benfica will be able to find the two goals they’ll need to at least force extra-time. It’s unlikely that Inter will be too ambitious either so Under 2.5 goals is priced at a better than expected 10/11.
It’s not very often Bayern Munich go in to a 2nd leg tie as 14/1 shots to qualify but a 3-0 humbling at the Etihad last week has left them needing snookers.
Pep Guardiola will give his old club due respect but he’ll want to prove his current team is now ready to claim the ultimate prize in club football. Pundits gushed about how Manchester City‘s victory over the 6-time winners of the trophy felt different this time, and a statement win in Munich tonight would cement their position as favourites ahead of a semi-final match-up with Real Madrid.
The macth could play in to Guardiola’s hands. Bayern must come out and try to get on the scoresheet first to get route back in to the tie. But the last team you’d want to do that against right now are City who can be devastating on the break.
Forget the first-leg score, getting 29/20 on a City win against anyone is good value. Pep has an isatiable appetite for perfection and in truth the scoreline could have been a lot worse for the Germans last week. There’s a gulf between these two giants at the moment and the Premier League champions can hammer that home tonight with another win.
