Celtic have come a long since their opening day defeat at Tynecastle but Ange Postecoglou’s squad will be pushed all the way once more in the capital tonight.
Rangers visit Celtic Park next midweek and with the Hoops four points behind they simply can’t afford to fall any further adrift. But Postecoglou will need to make the most of his depleted squad. Out are McGregor, Furuhashi, Turnbull and Ideguchi through injury while Rogic and Maeda are on international duty.
That leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the park and means the Australian gaffer will need to rely on the so-far unconvincing Giakoumakis up front.
It all makes for what could be a blockbuster at Tynecastle. The Jambos deserve respect on their home soil where they’ve lost just once all season (0-2 Rangers). They won’t be without their backers at 4/1.
A Hearts goal pays 8/15, not big enough on it’s own but Both Teams to Score could pay out at 4/5. Celtic’s main threat could come from their wide men, Liel Abada (11/8 anytime) who has scored in his last three outings and Jota (15/8 anytime) who has lit up the Premiership this season while weighing in with some important goals.
Rangers should have things much easier at Ibrox where Livingston are the visitors. The Lions usually barely lay a glove on the Gers, their goal in November’s 3-1 defeat was the first in ten meetings between the sides so backing Rangers to win to nil looks safe enough at 4/6.
At the other end of the table St Johnstone are in must-win territory. Dumped out of the Scottish Cup by League Two Kelty Hearts, bottom of the league and on the end of 10 successive defeats the Saintees couldn’t be any further from the Cup Double glory days of last season.
The next few weeks will go a long way to determining their fate this season with four of their next five matches against teams in the bottom six, starting with tonight’s clash against rivals Dundee.
The Dark Blues aren’t faring much better. Their 1-0 win over Dumbarton was their first in seven – their last win before that coming against St Johnstone at the start of December. That was Saints’ first defeat in eight in this fixture (W7 L1) so they’ll cling to the hope their good record gives them but it’s nigh on impossible to make a case for them apart from that.
That makes Dundee the value bet at 9/4 to win or 6/5 in the Draw No Bet market.
