The qualification stage for the Champions League continues tonight with another seven ties being played across Europe.
Maribor at 11/10 catch the eye at home to Shakhtyor Soligorsk. The visiting Belarusian champions are 12 games in to their season and sit 6th in the table having won half of their matches so far. They lost out at this stage to Ludogorets last year before failing to reach the Europa League group stages when defeated by Fola Esch of Luxembourg.
Maribor’s season has yet to begin but they’ve a decent recent record in Europe and competed in the Champions League group stages just five seasons ago. Since then they’ve only actually lost six of 19 European matches, despite failing to make much of an impact with Rangers, Rosenborg, Hammarby and Coleriane (on pens) responsible for knocking them out of their respective competitions.
Their record at home in European football is pretty formidable. They’ve lost just four times in 27 matches in Slovenia (to Rosenborg, Hammarby, Schalke and Liverpool), dating back to 2013. The likes of Sevilla, Celtic, Rangers, Sporting and Chelsea have all failed to win at Ljudski vrt so there’s a strong case for a home win this evening (kick-off 7.15).
Bodo/Glimt should have a comfortable evening against Icelandic side Klaksvikar. They shone in Europe last season and will be keen to make their mark again despite a disappointing start to their Eliteserein campaign. They’re just 1/8 to win the first leg but look worth a punt to win both halves at 1/1 with SBK.
Finally, spare a thought for punters in Sierra Leone who were on Under 94.5 Goals in the match between Kahunla Rangers and Lumbebu United. The game finished 95-0 and if that was unbelievable enough their rivals Gulf FC thrashed Koquima Lebanon 91-1 to trigger an investigation into match fixing. Unbelievably the half-time scores were 2-0 and 7-1 respectively meaning there was a goal scored every 30 seconds or so. Harry Kane is rumoured to be eyeing a move!
