The current holders meet the most successful club in the competition in tonight’s intriguing Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have endured a tumultuous season so far. Success on the pitch has been overshadowed by the furore and banning of Roman Abramovich from owning the club so the Champions League offers Thomas Tuchel’s men the chance to write some back-page headlines once more.
But Saturday’s 4-1 loss at home to Brentford was a real wake-up call and described as an abject defensive performance, the last thing you need before the likes of Karim Benzema, who has scored 34 goals in 35 appearances, comes calling.
Benzema’s record in the Champions League is even more impressive this season, averaging more than a goal per game to cement his place as the foruth highest scorer in the competition, six goals behind Robert Lewandowski. The Frenchman is 7/4 to score anytime tonight and 5/1 to break the deadlock.
Madrid saw off PSG’s challenge with a tremendous comeback in the last round but a 4-0 humbling at home to Barcelona two weeks ago was perhaps the wake-up call they needed too. 11/4 feels like a generous price for the away win especially when Chelsea aren’t exactly sailing on calm waters at the moment but the fact it’s the first leg of two makes the Draw No Bet market a bit more appealing at 11/8.
The night’s other Champions League match looks a mismatch according to the bookies. Bayern Munich are just 1/12 to qualify at Villarreal’s expense and 8/15 to win on the night.
But the Europa League champions will have something to say about that and cup king Unai Emery knows a thing or two about outfoxing more illustrious opponents. However his Villarreal side managed just one clean sheet in the group stages while Bayern rattled in 22 goals in their six games so Bayern’s firepower should previal over the course of the two legs.
The aformentioned Lewandowski is the key danger but he’s just 1/2 to score anytime. Instead back him as best bet to net first.
Keep an eye out for Jamie Kennedy’s Acca tonight after he landed last night’s at just over 9/2 inside the first half. As did Greg MacLean’s Bet of the Day, tongiht he’s turning his attention to the Bundesliga clash between Augsburg and Mainz.
