Finland hosts tonight’s European showpiece match between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt and the bookies think it’ll be a one-sided affair.
The game does of course pit the Champions League winners against the Europa League winners for the right to lift the European Super Cup and Madrid are just 2/5 to win inside 90 minutes.
The Germans, who beat Rangers in last season’s Europa finale, got off to the worst possible start to their Bundesliga season when they were thumped 6-1 at home by Bayern Munich on Friday so they’ll be making the trip to Helsinki with some trepadation.
As for Real Madrid, they’ve yet to start their La Liga season but they ended their pre-season matches with a 2-0 win over Juventus.
If Madrid take this at all seriously, and woudn’t they? then Frankfurt could be on the end of another uncomfortable defeat. They finished in the bottom half, 11th to be exact, of the Bundesliga last season as they put all their eggs in the European basket. As well as their Europa League winners medals they also earned entry directly to the Champions League group stages but look like they’ll be one to oppose when the big guns come calling.
Tonight falls firmly in that category, despite it being just slightly more important than a glorified friendly. There’a few options worth looking at; Madrid to be leading at half-time and full-time looks attractive at 11/10 as does Madrid -1.5 on the Asian Handicap at 2.100.
Karim Benzema looks most likely to score, as usual. The 34-year-old Frenchman is about to embark upon his 14th season with Real Madrid and he just seems to be getting better with age a evidenced by his remarkable 44 goals in 46 games last season, the best retrun of his career. The Real legend is 5/2 to open the scoring.
