After a mauling at Celtic Park on Saturday Rangers must pick themselves up for tough night in Amsterdam against 4-time winners Ajax tonight.
Last year’s Europa League finalists could hardly have asked for a tougher start than an away trip to the Dutch champions. However, they’ll take lots of encouragement from their 1-0 win at PSV Eindhoven a few weeks ago which secured their place in the group stages.
Ajax edged the Eredivise title, just 2 points ahead of PSV, so that provides a good barometer but the bookies make them clear favourites tonight at 9/20, versus 11/2 for Rangers.
Former Barcelona assistant Alfred Schreuder took over the reigns from Man Utd bound Erik ten Hag and has started with five wins from his opening five league games, scoring 16 in the process and conceding just three.
Rangers have often saved their best performances for European nights but this could be a step too far. There’s not the same jeopardy of a knock-out tie so the Gers can afford to be a bit more attack minded. That could leave them more exposed at the back.
With that in mind an Ajax win coupled with Over 2.5 match goals appeals at 5/6.
Liverpool have made an uncertain start to the season but more often than not they’ve looked a class above in Europe. A trip to Naples tonight presents a tough challenge against Luciano Spalletti’s side who finished third in Serie A last season and have made an unbeaten start to this season (W3 D2).
The Reds have a few injury concerns, especially in midfield and Napoli could capitalise. The Italians are 23/10 to repeat their 2019 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side and they’ll feel now could be a good time to take on last season’s finalists.
Bayer Leverkusen look too short at even money to win in Belgium tonight. The Germans have lost four of their first five Bundesliga matches. Hosts Club Brugge sit third in the Belgian top flight after seven games. They took a few thumpings at home last season when RB Leipzig and Manchester City put five past them but they did manage a draw with PSG and also won the reverse fixture in Germany.
