Whilst Rangers earned the dubious honour of recording the worst ever record in the Champions League group stages last night, Celtic fans will hoping they can save face when they face Real Madrid this evening.
A major concern for the Hoops will be the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers who did not travel with the squad. A trip to the Bernabeu is hard enough without your captain, Callum McGregor, and your most reliable defender.
Real Madrid still have top spot to play for so it’s not quite a dead rubber and anything other than a comfortable win for the 13-time champions will be a big surprise. Celtic’s notorious away form doesn’t give much cause for optimism nor their poor defensive record on the road. Madrid scored three on their visit to Celtic Park early in the group and another trio of goals pays 4/5 tonight.
Shakthar Donetsk can nick second place in the group with a win over RB Leipzig. The Ukrainians stunned the Bundesliga side when they met in September, winning 4-1 at the Red Bull Arena. They’re a lively bet at 15/4 tonight especially as their only defeat so far has been a 2-1 loss at Real Madrid.
Few would have expected two 0-0 draws in Man City‘s campaign so far but it’s helped them to the top of Group G and qualification for the last 16. That means Pep Guardiola will field a much changed side for the visit of Sevilla. The bookies don’t seem to have taken that in to account and have the home win priced up at just 1/4. That’s a bit unfair on punters so it’s hard to find value in that one.
Dortmund should secure 2nd place with at least a point in Copenhagen where the hosts will be aiming to score their first goal in the group stages. Based on that stat alone, the 9/4 on a Borussia win to nil looks a stand-out bet.
Juventus are in a precarious position in Group H. The best they can hope for is a Europa League place but they have to equal or better Maccabi Haifa‘s result tonight. Juve host already-qualified PSG whilst the Israeli’s host Benfica who have also secured their place in the knock-out stages. Keep an eye out PSG team news which might make Juve a good bet at home at 9/2.
In Group E top seeds Chelsea and AC Milan ends their campaigns at home. The Blues are already in the last 16 but should be able to exact some revenge on Dinamo Zagreb who beat them on matchday one. Milan and RB Salzburg are involved in a qualification shoot-out at the San Siro. The Italians hold a one-point advantage going in to the game so a draw will be enough for them but two home wins is to be expected, the Chelsea / AC Milan double pays even money.
