A FULL round of matches in the Scottish Premiership should make for an entertaining Wednesday evening, throw in a couple of EFL Cup ties, a bunch of Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie and DFB Pokal matches from Germany and we’ve got a pretty decent midweek card on our hands.
It’s the last chance to fill the coffers before Santa arrives but as ever keep it sensible.
Scottish Premiership
A new era for Ross County starts at Celtic Park on Wednesday as John Hughes takes charge of the Staggies for the first time. It remains to be seen if Celtic’s penalty-shoot-out-quadruple-treble-clinching Scottish Cup win at the weekend will prove to be a catalyst for the rest of their season but revenge will be in the air after County ended the Hoops trophy dominance a few weeks ago with a 2-0 win in the League Cup.
Celtic don’t have too much difficulty in scoring but the keeping them out at the other end has been their undoing. I expect a comfortable win for Neil Lennon’s men here and can see them notching a few goals. Over 2.5 Celtic goals at 4/5 appeals.
Revenge will also be on the agenda for Aberdeen who make the trip to Motherwell. Well’s outstanding result of the season was a 3-0 win at Pittodrie and Derek McInnes’ side will have a point to prove at Fir Park.
Motherwell’s form has been abysmal of late while the Dons have picked up a couple of handy wins to things back on track in the hunt for third place. It’s Aberdeen at 29/20 in this one for me.
The Rangers juggernaut rolls in to Perth where things have taken a turn for the worse for St Johnstone. Two consecutive league defeats has seen the Saints drop to 10th in the table, although they are just one point off seventh so the alarm bells aren’t exactly ringing.
With the Gers at 3/10 it’s hard to find value once again but St Johnstone don’t score too many (failed to score in 8 of 18) and despite now going three matches without a clean sheet I think 6/5 on Rangers to win to nil looks a small bit of value.
Something has to give at Easter Road where two of the in-form teams in Scotland meet in the shape of Hibs and St Mirren. Jack Ross was not happy with his troops after conceding a late equaliser on Saturday but it’s now seven without defeat for the Hibees in what has been an impressive season so far.
But arguably team of the season has been St Mirren. Not only did they knock Rangers out of the League Cup last week but they’re unbeaten for so long that Jim Goodwin’s hair was black the last time they tasted defeat. This is a tough one to call so Over 2.5 Goals would my play here at even money.
Elsewhere there’s another El Plastico between Hamilton and Livingston – no bet. And the bookies can’t separate Dundee United (13/8) and Kilmarnock (13/8) and nor can I.
