Scott Parker became the first manager to lose his job in the Premier League this season following a 9-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool but there are one or two others for whom the knives are sharpening.
Steven Gerrard is one of the those. The Liverpool legend has presided over 15 league defeats since he took charge last November – only Everton, with 19 defeats, have a worse record in that time. That number should become 16 tonight following Aston Villa’s visit to Arsenal.
The Gunners have made a brilliant start to the season, and look in good shape to take another three points at the Emirates. They’re 9/20 to win, add two of more goals to take that to 8/11 on a BetBuilder.
That could push Gerrard closer to the exit door. He’s currently 6/4 to be next manager to leave his position behind 5/4 favourite Brendan Rodgers.
Nottingham Forest have been splashing the cash since their promotion but they’re still miles behind big-spenders like Manchester City. Such is the strength in depth at the Etihad that Erling Haaland could be rested tonight according to reports but there’s so much quality in their squad that his absence would hardly be felt.
Liverpool may have stolen all the headlines at the weekend but City’s comeback from 0-2 down to win 4-2 against Crystal Palace showed they’re nowhere near ready to relinquish their crown.
They’ve scored four goals in two of their Premier League outings so far and it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if they did it again, especially if Haaland does start. Incredibly they’re just 10/11 to do so, however you can have 21/20 with SBK on ‘any other score’ which effectively requires them to win and score four or more. So look elsewehere for some value in the goals markets.
An early goal could be the way to go and it’s 5/6 that one is scored inside the first 19:00 minutes. One inside 10 minutes pays 9/4 with Bet365 – this has happened in City’s last two games – and two first half goals for City is even money.
For those of a certain age Liverpool v Newcastle evokes memories of some classic encounters, none moreso than the epic 4-3 win for the Reds back in 1996. We might not be guaranteed a thriller at Anfield tonight but it should be intriguing nonetheless. As an FYI, a 4-3 home win pays 80/1!
Newcastle racked up another draw at the weekend, maintaining their unbeaten start but they really need to start picking up wins if they’re to be considered among the top tier teams in the league. They could be without Allan Saint-Maximin as well as Callum Wilson so their strikeforce will be limited tonight. That should hand Liverpool the edge and they can win while there’s Over 2.5 goals scored at 3/4.
In Scotland Celtic begin their defence of the League Cup in Dingwall against Ross County. Ange Postecoglou has enjoyed a relatively placid start to the season with automatic Champions League group stage qualification meaning no nerve-jangling qualification matches and free midweeks, but that all changes tonight and the fixtures will come thick and fast from here on in.
That means he’s likely to utilise his squad tonight so there could be scope to get on some fringe players to score. Giorgios Giakoumakis sat out Sunday’s 9-0 win through illness but he’s back training and likely to start. the Greek hitman has a brilliant goals to minutes ratio and is 1/1 (Skybet) to find the net once more tonight.
An outside bet to score is Tony Ralston. The full back scored a vital goal in the title race at Ross County last season and weighed in with five goals from his right-back position. He could come in for Josip Juranovic tonight and at 5/1 could be worth a small punt.
Hearts huffed and puffed their way to three points against St Johnstone on Sunday. Not at their best but still good enough to pick up the three points and the significantly stronger squad should be deciding factor against Kilmarnock tonight. Both sides will have more important games in the coming weeks so again fringe players will probably feature heavily. Double the Jambos up with Arsenal for a 6/4 Double.
