Scotland fell at the penultimate hurdle of World Cup qualifiation when Ukraine last visited Hampden Park, so tonight they’ve a chance to exact some measure of revenge when the sides meet in the European Nations League.
Of course, nothing could make up for Steve Clarke’s sides’ failure back in the Summer but this tournament provides a route in to Euro 2024 and the Scots need to try to take every opportunity open to them.
Back-to-back wins over Armenia have got things back on track after a 3-0 defeat to Republic of Ireland but tonight’s fixture is close to must-win territory for the Dark Blues if they’re to top Group B1.
Ukraine eventually came up short, losing out to Wales in the play-off final for Qatar but they’re a quality outfit. They’ll miss the experience and guile of Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko however, who has a thigh injury. Scotland’s most notable absence is captain Andy Robertson although there’s plenty of cover in that left-back position.
The Ukrainians inflcited Scotland’s only defeat in 14 matches at Hampden when they won in June so it has become a bit of a fortress under Clarke. But this Scotland squad isn’t awash with goals, only John McGinn, with 13, has reached double figures for his country. Take out the Aston Villa midfielder and the rest of the 22-man squad only have 33 goals between them.
So if Scotland are to win it could be a narrow one but you certainly couldn’t be backing Under 2.5 Goals at 8/15. In Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk and the up-and-coming Mudryk the Ukrainians have lots of quality in forward areas and they’ve failed to score in just one of their 12 Nations League matches. So the 6/4 on Over 2.5 goals feel like a bit of value when you consider the last meeting finished 1-3.
In the outright market the Scots just edge favouritism at 13/8 compared to 9/5 for the visitors.
