Unibet Premier League – Don’t Discount the Draw Bet (Starts Easter Monday, 7pm)

05/04/2021 admin

Unibet Premier League Darts 2021 – Format

As you read this it is likely the Unibet Premier League is underway. Read on for all the Premier League Darts betting 2021 odds, tips and more.

In fact it is most likely ‘very underway’ as this delayed competition has been condensed to the point there is darts on SKY TV almost every week-night during the first and third weeks of both April and May.

That’s April 5-9, April 19-22 (includes Judgement Night where the bottom two players in the league table will be eliminated), May 5-7, then May 24-28.

The breaking news is that world champ Gerwyn Price has had to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for Covid. He will be replaced by James Wade.

World number one Gerwyn Price has been ruled out of the Unibet Premier League after testing positive for Covid-19, and will be replaced in the field by James Wade.

The tournament has reverted to the format used in 2018, with a permanent list of ten players, instead of nine and a guest ‘challenger’ each week and every part of the competition will be staged in Milton Keynes’ Marshall Arena.

Initially no live crowds are allowed albeit as Covid restrictions are steadily relaxed there is a good chance there will be an audience of some sort during the latter stages of the competition.

MVG Gone Cold

Of course these are strange times and in darts the strangest thing of all is the form loss of Michael van Gerwen.

Rumours are rife as to why he has gone off the boil so badly but as an overseas player with a young family at home being forced to live and perform to his best in sterile circumstances in Milton Keynes is a tough ask for anyone.

In similar circumstances last year (there were ten nights of darts over the space of 12 days in August/September) MVG finished sixth in the league standings and the competition was won by big outsider Glen Durrant. In the league part of the tournament that player had won just one of his last six games.

Ultimately the league format is flawed and many nights of darting action simply conclude with two ‘best of 19 leg’ semis and a ‘best of 21 leg’ final all played out on the same evening.

Score Draws Are a Formality

Regardless this is a darts betting feast and the bookies love the Premier League Darts as, unlike conventional darts matches, this format features the prospect of a draw which throws open many more betting opportunities in all sorts of markets.

As with football the draw is considered the bookies result. Quite simply punters back the home win and the away win, but normally this third potential outcome receives just a small fraction of punters money.

No doubt darts is the same and with the draw often unconsidered by punters it is often over-priced. Big mistake. In Premier League Darts the draw is commonplace. Last year the first three nights of darting action featured at least one draw. In the second night of action there was actually three of them. Nights six and seven had a pair of draws too.

Typically a draw in a Premier League game is priced at odds of 7/2. So a successful £1 double will return £20.25 and a £1 treble will pay £90. Nice money when the bet connects.

The Price is Right for Price

Premier League Darts Picks
If it is of any help our homework concludes Glen Durrant, who drew in five of his 16 league matches last year, and Gerwyn Price are the most likely to be involved in a drawn match.

The latter-named reigning world champion has drawn 11 of his last 32 Premier League games and on that basis you could argue he should be around 2/1 to draw any match he plays and not 7/2.

Elsewhere, with Michael Smith not in this year’s competition, we believe the player likely to amass the greatest number of 180’s both overall and a night-by-night basis is Nathan Aspinall. The 29-year-old chalked-up 61 of them during the league stages of this competition last year.
