We’re back in European action with games in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League across the next three nights.
Graham Potter has the chance to build some momentum following a win at the weekend but there are few teams in better shape across Europe right now than Borussia Dortmund.
The 1-0 win over Leeds was hardly a classic but if Potter is to go on to be a successful Chelsea manager then it could prove pivotal. It was just a their third win in 16 which is an awful return for what is a very talented and expensively assembled squad.
A one-goal defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg leaves them well in the tie tonight but the Germans are flying at the moment and have notched 10 wins on the bounce in all competitions. That run has seen them draw level with Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga table and there’s no doubt they’re one of the form teams in Europe at the moment.
The bookies rate the Germans as favourites to go through at 4/7 with the Blues at 5/6. It’s hard to argue with that given the recent form of the two sides. But can they win at Stamford Bridge tonight? Well, at 3/1 they look very tempting. Problem is, the don’t need to as a draw will be good enough to see them progress and even a one-goal defeat will take the tie to extra-time. On the double-chance market Dortmund are still backable at 5/6.
There’s little to back up a goalsfest tonight either. All of Chelsea’s last eight matches have gone Under 2.5 Goals, in fact all but one has been Under 1.5 Goals and only one has seen both teams score. Despite plenty of ability in forward areas it’s just not clicking in the final third for Potter’s side. Dortmund have scored almost twice as many league goals as the Blues (with all due respect to the Bundesliga), and scored in five of six group stage matches including all three away from home.
The night’s other Champions League tie sees Benfica welcome Club Brugge to Lisbon. The Portuguese are in pole position following a 2-0 win in Belgium three weeks ago and are just 2/5 to claim another win this evening.
Brugge have struggled this season and trail Belgian league leaders Genk by a massive 21 points. They got off to a flier in Group B, winning their first three games including a tremendous 4-0 win at Porto but the wheels have come off a bit since then (they subsequnetly lost 4-0 to Porto in the reverse fixture) and they’ve won just two of their last 10.
A comfortable win for the Eagles, who scored 16 goals in a group that include PSG and Juventus, looks on the cards as does a few goals. Over 2.5 Benfica goals pays 6/4.
