The festive football continues on Tuesday with another two Premier League matches, this time at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.
The early evening kick-off sees Bournemouth make the trip to west London to take on a Chelsea side who have yet to get going under Graham Potter.
The former Brighton boss hasn’t found his feet in the Blues’ hotseat and the pressure is begining to mount already after six domestic matches without a win, in which they’ve lost the last four. In fairness, that run has included clashes with Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and in-form Newcastle United so Potter will be looking forward to a kinder run of fixtures coming up.
That starts tonight with what looks a winnable game against Bournemouth who have only managed one victory on the road this season. On current form though Chelsea are too short at 1/3. Confidence could be fragile and if the Cherries can get on the scoresheet first they could give the Blues a bloody nose. It looks like a game best left alone.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United can move to within a point of top four with a win over Nottingham Forest. The visitors have found the going tough on their return to the top tier but although they’re currently second bottom of the table there’s plenty of teams within touching distance so as not to get too concerned just yet.
However they’ll need to improve on the solitary away goal they’ve scored so far. United haven’t been awash with goals either, their tally of 20 is the second lowest of the teams in the top half (only Chelsea have fewer).
Erik ten Hag will be pleased to be able to put the Cristiano Ronaldo saga behind him. The Incredible Sulk was a massive distraction for the Red Devils and they’ve arguably been better without him this season. The onus will be on Marcus Rashford to provide the cutting edge for United. The England striker is the club’s tops scorer with nine for the season so far.
United boast the best home defensive record in the league, that couple with Forest’s impotence in front of goal on the road suggest we could be in for clean sheet for the hosts.
