A shock cup exit at Sheffield Wednesday has increased the pressure on Newcastle in the EFL Cup tonight.
Eddie Howe will be desperate to avoid going out of two cup competitions in the space of four days especially when a win this evening leaves them just one round away from Wembley.
Unless you count the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006, the last “major” trophy won by the Magpies was the FA Cup, back in 1955 so there’s plenty of incentive.
Leicester City are the visitors tonight and the Foxes successfully navigated a tricky FA Cup tie at Gillingham at the weekend but they lost 3-0 to Newcastle on Boxing Day so go in to tonight’s game as 5/1 outsiders.
Howe rested eight players at the weekend so you’d expect them to be closer to full-strength tonight. 11/20 on the home win looks about right.
But goals could be a better bet. Over 2.5 goals has landed in each of the last seven meetings between the sides. Newcastle created a glut of chances against Wednesday and Howe has called on his team to be more clinical. On the face of it Leicester haven’t found goals easy to come by this season but away from home their tally of 17 is the third highest in the Premier League. Back Over 2.5 Goals at 4/5.
In Scotland there’s a trio of Challenge Cup matches. Both Hamilton and Clyde are struggling in their respective leagues and each suffered defeat once more at the weekend but they meet tonight at New Douglas Park, which both teams have been calling home this season.
Despite propping up the Championship table the Accies look a good option at 8/13 to win at the expense of their tenants tonight.
Combine that with a win for Rangers B in the Lowland League for a 134/100 Double. The Gers youths have suffered three defeats in a row and slumped to 4th in the table but can bounceback with a win over Civil Service Strollers who have only won one in five themselves.
