European football is back this week after what feels like an age.
Argentina have won the World Cup, Ronaldo has departed football’s main stage and Neil Warnock has come out of retirement! since the last round of Euro action but we’re now approching the business end of the season and it starts tonight with two Champions League ties in Milan and Paris.
At the San Siro it’s Italian champions AC Milan versus fifth in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur.
Milan have endured a terrible start to the year and have slipped out of the top four in Serie A on goal difference. Their 1-0 win over Torino at the weekend was their first in eight, a run which has seen them lose to rivals Inter twice, ship four goals at Lazio and concede five to 15th placed Sassuolo at the San Siro.
That woeful run has piled the pressure on title-winning boss Stefano Pioli who may not survive an exit from the competition at the hands of Tottenham.
I Rossoneri lost both their Group E matches to Chelsea as they finished second in the table so Spurs will be aiming to emulate their London counterparts over the two legs but their own inconsistency is a cause for concern. An impressive 1-0 win over champions Manchester City was followed by a 4-1 humbling by Leicester City – Spurs’ season summed up in the space of six days.
Antonio Conte’s men topped their Champions League group which included Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting and Marseille. Not the strongest group but you can only beat what’s in front of you and they’ve certainly got the players capable of hurting an out-of-sorts Milan on their own patch.
The hosts are 29/20 to claim a first leg advantage but they’ve not beaten Tottenham in any previous encounters. Spurs are 2/1 to earn an away win but in a match they might be happy to draw it could be better to back them in the goals market. Given Milan’s recent defensive frailties – they’ve conceded 15 in their last 6, the 7/4 on Harry Kane and co to score two or more could be worth a punt.
In the French capital there’s a repeat of the 20/21 Champions League final when Bayern Munich pipped PSG to become champions of Europe and the bookies are expecting another close encounter. They can barely separate the sides with Bet365 going 8/5 on the Parisiens and 31/20 the German champions.
A lot could hinge on the PSG team news. They’re sweating on the fitness of Kylian Mbappe and World Cup winner Lionel Messi. Mbappe has resumed training quicker than expected following a thigh injury while Messi is in the squad despite receiving treatment for a hamstring injury.
Christophe Galtier’s side go in to the game off the back of two defeats which have seen them knocked out of the French Cup and pegged back a little in Ligue 1.
It’s not been a vintage season for Bayern but they still top Bundesliga, albeit by just one point, and have only lost once in the league all season. They were imperious in the Group stages, with six wins from six in a group that included Inter, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen. In fact it was the Czech’s who were the only team to score against them acrtoss the six matches.
This is Bayern’s stage and the bookies have them as 4/7 faves to qualify and they can take a huge step towards that tonight. Take some extra insurance by backing them to win in the Draw no Bet market at 5/6.
After marking his return to MFT with a winner on Saturday, Jamie Kennedy shares an 11/2 Goals Acca for Tuesday.
