Confidence must be coursing through the veins of Steve Clarke’s squad at the moment.
A smash-n-grab raid in Norway on Saturday had the Tartan Army dusting down their passports for a trip to Germany next summer. A win over Georgia tonight and they can all but start converting their cash to Euros.
But tonight’s visitors are worthy of some respect off the back of a run of 12 unbeaten in competitive matches (W8 D4). Granted, most of those victories came in the third tier of the Nations League but there were wins over Sweden, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and a recent 1-1 draw with Norway in among that run.
So it could be a night where the Tartan Army have to be patient at a full Hampden Park. Even more so against a nation that’s previously caused mortal damage to Scotland’s 2008 and 2016 qualifying campaigns.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the man the Scots will need to keep quiet. The Napoli winger has had a breakthrough season with the Serie A champions following a £10m move from Dinamo Tblisi and 11/4 to get on the scoresheet.
Lyndon Dykes led the line for Clarke in Oslo and snatched a late goal. He’s 11/8 to score anytime, but the best value still appears to be with the squad’s top scorer, John McGinn at 15/8.
This looks likely to be a close encounter and the weight of expectation adds a bit more pressure on to the Scots who are 4/9 to win. That feels a bit on the short side so instead we’ll go with the game to be won by a single goal (either side) at 13/8.
There’s not too much else that stands out this evening but Belgium (at Estonia), Portugal (at Iceland) and Hungary (home to Lithuania) look solid bets for a no-frills 20/21 treble.
