No-one needs reminding just how dangerous Real Madrid can be in the Champions League, especially not Manchester City!
The Spaniards looked dead and buried in last year’s semi-final against City before staging one of the most dramatic comebacks the competition has ever seen. Two injury time goals for Madrid levelled the tie at 5-5 before a Karim Benzema penalty in extra-time sent Los Blancos in to the final against Liverpool.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men of course went on to win a record 14th Champions League / European Cup crown and with the La Liga title looking beyond them this time round they can focus fully on adding a 15th this season.
However the bookies rank them 5/2 outsiders to qualify from their tie with the Premier League champions with City as short as 2/7 to avenge last year’s exit.
Unlike last season, Pep Guardiola’s men have home advantage in the second leg but the tie feels a bit more in the balance than the odds suggest.
It’s not often you’ll get better than 2/1 on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu so the 21/10 will be popular among punters as will the 4/6 on Madrid to avoid defeat on the Double Chance market.
Another way to get onside with the holders is by backing them at 1.980 on the Asian Handicap with 0.0,+0.5 of a start. Pep’s men can be content with a share of the spoils at the Bernabeu so this could be a good option.
Both of last year’s ties were classics and there was no shortage of goals. Over 2.5 goals is priced up at 8/11 tonight.
Benzema and Erling Haaland will be the men to watch as ever. The Frenchman scored three across the two meetings last season and is 8/5 to net tonight.
Haaland has been in incredible form in his debut season for City. As well as breaking records domestically the Norwegian striker has scored 12 in eight Champions League appearances this campaign. He’s even money to add to his incredible numbers tonight.
Partick Thistle righted a few wrongs when they beat Queen’s Park 4-0 when the sides last met. The Spiders had held the upper hand prior to that, winning all three league meetings between the Glasgow clubs. Now they meet in the first leg of the first play-off at Firhill tonight.
Owen Coyle’s men have had a disasterous end to the season and need to put the disappointment of missing out on the title behind them as they go in to the play-offs. But that could be easier said than done after just one win in seven.
In-form Thistle look well priced at 10/11 to take a first leg advantage this evening.
