Current Champions of Europe, Chelsea, continue their defence of the trophy with a relatively straight-forward looking tie at Stamford Bridge tonight.
On top of that Champions League triumph back in May, the Blues have since been crowned World Club Champions and have the chance to add more silverware to the trophy cabinet with the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool looming large on Sunday.
But first they must take care of business in Europe and they could hardly have picked a better tie to progress to the last 16 of the competition.
French champions Lille have failed to reach the heights of last season’s lockdown title and are struggling in 11th place in Ligue 1. They have been able to raise their game on the odd occasion this season but all too often they’ve been found wanting, winning just nine of their 25 league games.
The Blues can take advantage and should secure a comfortable first leg win but are just 3/10 for the victory. Striker Romelu Lukaku has come in for some criticism following his performance at Crystal Palace on Saturday when he touched the ball just seven times in 90 minutes, an all-time low for any player in the Premier League but he’s been boosted to 4/1 by Bet365 to net first.
Thomas Tuchel might opt to take him out the firing line so someone like Jorginho, who has scored nine Premier League goals as well as a couple of Champions League penalties, could be better value to hit the net at 21/10.
Tonight’s other Champions League match sees Villarreal host Juventus. The Italians topped Chelsea’s group but were soundly beaten by four goals to nil at Stamford Bridge so they’ll more than likely fall a little short of going deep in to the tournament but they’re 8/13 favourites to qualify against the Spaniards.
El Submarino Amarillo have fared relatively well in La Liga this season and sit sixth in the table. They’re in good form and could be dangerous opponents for Juve tonight.
Both sides have been strong defensively, conceding fewer than one goals per game in their league campaigns so this could be a low scorer. Under 0.5, 1.0 first half goals on the Asian Handicap pays 2.150.
Storm damage has forced the postponement of matches at Swansea and Fleetwood but there’s plenty of other matches to get stuck in to in England.
West Brom are sliding down the Championship table at an alarming rate and even a change in manager hasn’t arrested the slide. Just one win in 10 (W1 D3 L6) has seen them fall to 11th in the table and out of the promotion picture, while tonight’s opponents Middlesbrough are heading in the other direction.
Since Chris Wilder’s appointment Boro have picked up 27 points from a possible 42 and are genuined play-off contenders. Their home form has been pretty good too and will look to bounce back from Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Bristol City. Based on the form the 5/4 on a home win appeals.
Top of the table Rotherham should be solid acca picks in League One at home to struggling Morecmabe who have given manager Stephen Robinson permission to speak to St Mirren about their vacant managerial position.
Bolton‘s goalscoring exploits in League One have seen them climb back up the table in recent weeks. They’ve scored 19 in their last seven and are even money (Bet365) to score two or more against Lincoln City who have kept just two clean sheets in 31 league outings.
Be wary of Kelty Hearts at a short price at home to bottom side Cowdenbeath in Scottish League Two. The league leaders look like they’ve taken their eye off the ball a bit in recent weeks. Just two wins in their last five has allowed Forfar cut the gap at the top to six points, although Kelty still have a couple of games in hand.
Visitors Cowdenbeath may prop up the table but and have six points to make up on Elgin, who they beat at the weekend but it’s now three wins from four for the Blue Brazil and their tails will be up for a visit to New Central Park. Kelty could of course hammer the visitors but they’re too short to back at 1/4 or to get involved in the handicaps and on the flipside a cheeky quid on Cowdenbeath at 10/1 might not be the worst longshot tonight.
