Few would have predicted the kind of run Rangers enjoyed in Europe last season, especially after their miserable Champions League exit at hands of Malmo this time last season.
But the Europa League runners-up begin their European campaign in earnest tonight in Belgium as they try once more to reach the group stages of the Champions League.
Opponents Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have enjoyed a rapid rise back to the top of Belgian football. After being promoted to the top flight for the first time in 48 years in 2021 they topped the Belgian league at the end of the regular season as they chased their first title since 1935. But in the champions play-off they finished second to Club Brugge, denying the club a 12th national title.
Union’s lack of European pedigree make them a bit of an unknown quantity at this level and a glance at their squad sees a couple of Englishmen who’s experience only extends to League One level. Belgium’s player of the year, and scorer of 45 goals in 58 matches for Union, Deniz Undav, has been recalled to Brighton so he’ll be a big miss.
Rangers quality should prevail over the two legs and they’re 4/11 to qualify. Giovanni van Bronckhurst’s men dug out a 2-1 at Livingston at the weekend and of course pulled off some terrific results in Europe last season, although most were at Ibrox.
13/10 on the away win appeals even though Rangers will feel they can complete the job at Ibrox if they fail to win.
Monaco or PSV await Rangers should they qualify and those two meet in the principality tonight.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is in charge of the Dutchmen and he led PSV to second place in Eredivisie, finishing just two points behind Ajax last season. Luuk De jong is back at the club having scored 112 goals in 204 games in his previous stint at the club and he could be a key man tonight.
Monaco finished a distant third, 17 points behins PSG in Ligue 1. They topped Europa League Group B last season, in doing so knocking out PSV who finished third. The French side came out on top over the two meetings, winning 2-1 in Eindhoven before drawing in Monaco.
But the tables could be turned this time around and PSV look a bit big at 12/5 to grab an away win or 2.000 (even money) on the Asian Handicap 0.0/+0.5.
Elsewhere, Benfica look a good thing at home to Midtjylland. The Danes have already come through the 2nd qualifying round to get to this stage but it took a penalty shoot-out to overcome Cypriots AEK Larnaca following two 1-1 draws.
The Eagles should secure a good first leg win in Lisbon and are as short as 1/3 to win. Benfica to be winning at half-time and to score Over 1.5 goals pays 1/1 on a Bet365 BetBuilder.
