For Rangers the task is pretty clear if not very simple tonight. A five-goal win over Ajax is all that’s required to book a place in the Europa League so it’s fair to say fans will be traveling to Ibrox more in hope than expectation.
The Dutch side will be disappointed to be out of the running for qualification to the last 16 themselves, especially after a spectacular start to their campaign in which they demolished Rangers 4-0 in Amsterdam.
Ajax clearly have the better squad than Rangers but for a match they can afford to lose they’re on the skinny side at just 17/20 to win in Glasgow. The Gers fans on the other hand might fancy a bit of the 14/5 available on a home win. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men owe their supporters a performance, especially at home, in what has been a dismal campaign so far.
As if more motivation was required, Rangers will be desperate to avoid the tag of completing the worst group stage campaign ever. They’re a defeat by a couple of goals away from that (although Plzen could beat them to it tonight if they go down heavily to Barcelona) so it’s another reason to think things might be a bit closer on the southside of Glasgow. It’s 10/11 for Rangers to avoid defeat.
Defensively, Ajax haven’t been much better than Rangers. They’ve conceded a massive 15 goals in their five games, so the Gers to score two or more also appeals at 6/4.
Liverpool and Napoli will battle it out for top spot in Group A but like Rangers the Reds need a big win. That’ll be tough against the Serie A league leaders. It’s a bit of a dead rubber for both sides so probably best avoided but Napoli, who are unbeaten this season, look the bet at 14/5 against a Liverpool side who are really struggling for form.
Group D is as tight as they come. The only team with any sort of guarantee at this stage is Spurs who know they’ll at least make it to the Europa.
Sporting host Eintracht Frankfurt and either side could top the group or finish bottom by the end of the evening. Home advantage gives Sporting the edge in this winner-takes-all tie and they’re a handy looking 13/10 to get the job done.
Group C gave new meaning to the phrase ‘Group of Death’ for the aforementioned Plzen. They were grouped with three European heavyweights and as expected have suffered at the hands of the big guns. They’ve conceded 20 goals so far and could be on the end of another hammering tonight when Barcelona call.
Barca are out of the competition so it’s a chance for them to let their hair down. Three or more goals for the visitors pays 11/10.
