The Carabao Cup has never been a happy hunting ground for punters and tonight looks no different.
Premier League teams that have been participating in European competitions join the competition to make up the 32 teams in Round 3 and that’s thrown up six ties between two top flight teams.
Pick of the bunch looks to be between Manchester City and last season’s runners-up, Chelsea tomorrow.
Of course the World Cup is just around the corner so the starting XIs for the top teams could be barely recognisable from Saturday.
However, despite being viewed as the least important of the three domestic trophies it has been dominated by top six sides with 18 of the 22 editions of the competiton this century have been won by Manchester City (6), Liverpool (4), Manchester United (4), Chelsea (3), Spurs (1).
Backing the top sides (with the obvious exception of City and Chelsea who play each other) pays a 5/1 four-fold. It’s by no means a shoe-in however; Arsenal host Brighton, Spurs make the tricky trip to Nottingham Forest. Liverpool welcome Derby and Manchester United get the chance to avenge their weekend defeat to Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
Aside from that this competition is best left alone.
In the Championship it’s a surprise to see in-form Coventry City at even money to win against a struggling Wigan side. Viktor Gyökeres’ sixth goal of the campaign secured the three points for Mark Robins’ me at Watford at the weekend, whilst Wigan were denied all three points at Swansea by a late penalty.
It was the Latics’ sixth game without a win (L5 D1), making it just one win in 9 – a run that’s seen them slip to second bottom of the table. By contrast the Sky Blues have lost just one their last seven (W5 D1 L1) to climb up to 14th in the table.
In Scotland, Aberdeen can close the gap on Rangers to four points but their away from has been their achilles’ heel this year.
The travel down to Livingston tonight and these are the kind of games they need to be winning if, as predicted by many at the start of the season, they’re to cement third place in the Premiership.
They’ve won two of their last three visits to the Toni Macaroni. However Livi are just as unpredictable as the Dons and they’ve been pretty decent home. Apart from defeat to Ross County they’ve done everything you’d expect with four wins and their other two defeats at the hands of Celtic and Rangers.
So it won’t be an easy one for Jim Goodwin’s side. With that in mind goals could be a good angle. Livi hit three at Rugby Park on Friday night whilst Aberdeen matches are averaging 3.69 goals per game. Over 2.5 goals pays 6/5.
