The atmosphere will be red hot at Firhill tonight as Partick Thistle aim for a little bit of Scottish football history.
The Jags will be the first team to gain promotion after finishing 4th in the Championship if they can get past Ross County over two legs. And Kris Doolan’s men couldn’t be in better shape going in to the Play-Off finale.
Thistle swept aside Queen’s Park after a minor scare in the first leg, winning 8-3 on aggregate. They then hit another eight over two legs against Ayr United to record an 8-0 aggregate win, setting up the showdown with the Highlanders.
Those 16 goals make it 32 scored in their last 10 outings, a phenomenal return at this stage of the season when every match comes with its own degree of pressure.
That turns up the heat on a County side who have not won in three and can be thankful that Dundee Utd collapsed in the final furlong of the season, otherwise they’d be down already.
But we’re about to find out if there’s a gulf in class between the divisions. The bookies think there is, making County 8/13 to retain their place in the top flight and Thistle 6/5 to earn promotion. But despite being favourites to qualify Ross County are 2/1 to win tonight with the Championship side at 23/20.
Interestingly, all three of Scotland’s other promotion play-offs have gone the way of the teams coming up. The Spartans, Annan Athletic and Airdrieonians all came through the play-offs, beating the team from the league above them in the final, so perhaps there’s something to be said for carrying momentum in to these games.
Going purely on form, Partick’s recent goals record can’t be ignored. They’re 11/10 to score two or more, something they’ve done in nine of their last 10. Doolan’s side will feel they’ll need some kind of lead to take to Dingwall next week and have shown they’ve plenty about them going forward and can cause County some problems tonight.
