It’s difficult enough when getting involved in betting on cup matches in the UK but when all that’s on offer today are cup games in the likes of Portugal, Greece, Hungary and the Netherlands then it looks like a no-bet kind of day.
It does give us the chance to take an early look ahead to the weekend’s fixtures however and see who might be on the shortlist.
The Merseyside Derby is the one that catches the eye on Monday night. The mood in either camp will be very different after last week’s results. Everton‘s new gaffer, Sean Dyche had an immediate impact at Goodison presiding over a 1-0 win against league leaders Arsenal, whilst Liverpool slumped to their seventh defeat and fourth in a row without a win.
Bouyed by the new management team there’ll be plenty of Bluenoses who fancy a bit of the 5/1 on the Toffees to add to the Reds’ current misery.
Bournemouth have lost seven of their last eight and dropping like a stone. Visitors Newcastle will be rueing two draws in their last couple of games otherwise they’d be just six points off the top. They’ve still only been beaten once this season in the league and look a solid bet at 8/15 to win the tea-time kick-off on Saturday.
Leicester v Spurs looks like a game that could produce goals.
On Sunday Man Utd will be aiming to go one better after they could only draw with Leeds at Old Trafford last night. A win for the Red Devils pays 4/5.
By the time Man City play they could be eight points behind Arsenal. It’s been a week of turmoil off the pitch for City but Pep Guardiola will be desperate to put last week’s 1-0 defeat at Spurs behind them. Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has never won against Guardiola (D4 L8) and that record’s unlikely to improve on Sunday.
It’s the Scottish Cup Fifth Round north of the border starting with Hearts visit to Hamilton on Friday night. The Accies have hit a bit of form recently so it might be bit more challenging for the Jambos than initially thought when the draw was made.
Celtic and Rangers both have home ties against St Mirren and Partick Thistle respectively so the Glasgow giants should see themselves comfortably through to the quarter-finals.
Motherwell could face a tricky tie in Kirkcaldy against Raith Rovers. Well have been far better away from home than at Fir Park this season so perhaps won’t be too concerned but Rovers are unbeaten in 10 and still in play-off contention in the Championship.
Plenty of members cashed in when 6th-tier Darvel stunned Aberdeen in the last round but there’s none of the 16s, 20s and even 50/1s available on them overcoming Falkirk this time round. Bookies are taking no chances, pricing them up between 3/1 and 7/2 to win inside the 90 minutes.
Championship leaders Queen’s Park make it on the shortlist at a very tempting 9/5 away to Morton. The Spiders grabbed a vital win over second-placed Ayr United last week, which, coupled with a draw for Dundee left them four points clear at the top. Mortong are slipping down the table and are winless in eight in all competitions.
