As always at the end of an international break we’ve a bit of a lull before things get back to full swing domestically, so it’s gives us the chance to get a head start on the weekend and begin our shortlist in earnest.
The Premier League returns with a bang in Saturday’s early kick-off when the top two meet at the Etihad in a pivotal clash between Man City (7/10) and Liverpool (10/3).
Newcastle v Chelsea should be a good one too. The Blues could move within a point of the Magpies with a win but both sides have been in patchy form.
Sheffield United v Bournemouth isn’t a match that stands out but there could be goals at Bramall Lane. 83% of Sheff Utd home matches have seen Over 2.5 goals, while all of Bournemouth away matches have gone Over 2.5. It’s 4/5 for three or more on Saturday.
Nottingham Forest are still unbeaten at home (W2 D3) and are 11/5 to beat Brighton. You’re never quite sure what you’re going to get from Brighton, who are now winless in their last six Premier League games. They’re only six points better off than Forest but have conceded three more so Forest goals could be a better angle, especially considering the Seagulls have drawn four of their last five.
Southampton are the form team in the Championship and visit fourth-bottom Huddersfield who have won one point in 12. There could be a BetBuilder angle on the Saints who are 7/10 to win.
In-form Watford could makes things difficult for table-toppers Leicester who lost their last two games before the break. 8/15 looks too short to be supporting the Foxes.
QPR look like they need to be opposed these days and the 4/6 on Norwich – who got back to winning ways with a morale-boosting win at Cardiff – will probably be gone by 3pm on Saturday.
We’ll be on goals in League Two in some way or another. Overall the league continues to entertain, averaging 3.00 goals per game, just slightly below the 3.08 in the Premier League but well ahead of the 2.74 in the Championship and 2.50 in League One.
Derek Adams has returned to Ross County for a third time hoping to repeat the kind of success during his previous stints. He could get off to a flier thanks to Kilmarnock being the visitors. Killie have picked up just two points from six away games and had an abysmal away record last season. The Staggies look overpriced at 21/10 to win and 9/5 to score two or more.
Likewise Dundee at 31/20. The Dark Blues have made a great return to the top flight and only Rangers have won at Dens Park this season. Visitors Hibs have been as unpredictable as ever but three wins from 13 isn’t good enough. IT would be hard to back against Dundee at those odds.
It’s Scottish Cup 3rd round weekend and Friday night could throw up an upset. Jeanfield Swifts thumped Elgin City 6-0 in the last round and have been rewarded with a trip to Clyde, who are playing at Hamilton’s New Douglas Park these days.
There’s only one team wise off than Elgin in the SPFL and that’s…Clyde who 7 points behind and rooted to the bottom of League Two. Jeanfield might be two divisions below them in the pyramid but they’ll be right up for another scalp and a potential tie against one of the big boys who enter the competition in the next round. The Perthshire side look worth a punt at 13/5.
Other teams to keep an eye for in the Cup this weekend are Peterhead (4/1), who are going well in League Two and welcome Ayr United to Balmoor Stadium, League Two’s Dumbarton who could give Alloa a bloody nose at 19/10 and Partick Thistle to win a Glasgow Derby against Queen’s Park.
