Something a bit different today as we await the return of club football at the weekend; a look at some of the stats behind the start to the season, hopefully providing some pointers for goals bets this weekend.
Let’s explore the breakdown of the most prolific teams, those conceding the most and which teams have been best for BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals so far across the top four divisions in England and Scotland.
Goals Scored
Swindon are the team to watch at the moment after netting a whopping 20 goals already this season. Close behind are Brighton who have made a great start to the season with 12 goals in their first four outings.
- Swindon – 20 goals in 6 matches (3.33 avg)
- Brighton – 12 goals in 4 matches (3.00 avg)
- Crewe – 17 goals in 6 matches (2.83 avg)
- Wrexham – 17 goals in 6 matches (2.83 avg)
- Norwich City – 14 goals in 5 matches (2.80 avg)
Goals Conceded
At the other end of the pitch poor Burnley are way out in front in terms of goals conceded after a tough start to life in the Premiership. Morton’s leaky defence have conceded 3.67 goals per game and they face a trip to top of the table Dundee Utd this weekend.
- Burnley – 11 goals in 3 matches (3.67 avg)
- Morton – 11 goals in 4 matches (3.67 avg)
- Southampton – 12 goals in 5 matches (2.40 avg)
- Annan Athletic – 12 goals in 5 matches (2.40 avg)
- Sutton Utd – 16 goals in 7 matches (2.29 avg)
Total Goals Per Game
Wrexham matches have been the most entertaining so far yielding over 4.5 goals per game on average, largely thanks to scorelines like 5-3, 4-2 and 5-5!!
- Wrexham – 4.57 total goals per game
- Brighton – 4.50 total goals per game
- Swindon – 4.43 total goals per game
- Norwich City – 4.40 total goals per game
- Southampton – 4.40 total goals per game
- Queen of the South – 4.40 total goals per game
BTTS & Over 2.5 Goals
Nine teams boast a 100% record of both teams scoring, although you should note that teams in League One and League have played more games; Brighton, West Ham, Cardiff, Rotherham, Swansea, West Brom, Queen of the South, Partick Thistle, St Mirren.
Twelve teams have seen all their games go Over 2.5 Goals; Aston Villa, Brighton, Burnley, Luton, Cardiff, Rotherham, Norwich, Southampton, Newport, Morton, Partick Thistle, Queen of the South.
Best Leagues for Goals
The Scottish Championship trumps all leagues for goals. Over 2.5 goals in seven out of 10 games on average and both teams score in two thirds of matches. The Premier League isn’t too far behind for entertainment.
Steer clear of League One for any kind of goals bet, BTTS and Over 2.5 land in less than half the matches in that division and you should definitely avoid Scottish League Two for Over 2.5 bets, only 32.00% have landed so far.
- Scottish Championship: BTTS – 66.67% | Over 2.5 – 71.43%
- Premier League: BTTS – 64.10% | Over 2.5 – 69.23%
- Championship: BTTS – 63.33% | Over 2.5 – 60.00%
- League Two: BTTS – 56.10 | Over 2.5 – 56.10%
- Scottish League Two: BTTS – 52.00% | Over 2.5 – 32.00%
- Scottish League One: BTTS – 48.00% | Over 2.5 – 60.00%
- Scottish Premiership: BTTS – 45.83% | Over 2.5 – 41.67%
- League One: BTTS – 39.19% | Over 2.5 – 44.59%
A few other goals related stats; Cheltenham have yet to score a goal after six games played, Dundee Utd have conceded just ince in four games and Portsmouth just twice in six. Stenhousemuir and Hamilton have kept clean sheets in 80% of their games so far.
Hopefully these stats can guide us to some winning goals bets at the weekend. If there’s any other useful stats worth sharing please do so in the comments section below.
