The FIFA Under-20 World Cup has reached the semi-final stage in Argentina with both matches taking place at Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona, La Plata today.
Israel are the surprise packages of the tournament – ironic because the tournament was moved to Argentina after original hosts, Indonesia refused to host the Israelis.
After losing and drawing their opening games they qualified from the group with a 92nd minute winner against Japan. That set up a tie with Uzbekistan whom they beat 1-0 before shocking Brazil with a 3-2 extra-time win.
They now face Uruguay, who were top seeds going in to the tournament. They finished second, behind England, to whom they lost 3-2, before seeing off Gambia and the United States in the knock-out stages.
The Uruguayans have kept four clean sheets in their five matches and will be well supported across the border in La Plata. Bet365 rate Uruguay at 4/5 to win with Israel at 10/3.
Chelsea’s Cesare Casadei has been the star man of the tournament so far. The young midfielder who was signed for a reported €15m from Inter, has scored six goals in five games for Italy including a crucial 87th minute penalty against England in the Last 16.
The Azzuri face a South Korea side who knocked-out an impressive Nigeria side in the quarter finals. The Super Eagles had already knocked out hosts Argentina and beat Italy in the ‘Group of Death’ but couldn’t find a way past the Koreans despite 22 attempts at goal to four.
It’s unlikely South Korea will be able to perform a second smash’n’grab so the 4/6 on Italy looks worth backing.
Despite the tournament having a history of throwing up some surprise semi-finalists (Ecuador 2019, Venezuala, 2017 runners-up, Mali 2015, Iraq 2013, Costa Rice 2009) it’s usually those nations with a strong reputation that prevail. Backing both favourites to qualify today pays 4/5 at SBK and for them both to win their matches a healthy 19/10.
