IT’S been 27 years since Everton last won the FA Cup and 13 years since they graced the final but they’ve a great chance to go deep in to the competition this year with Boreham Wood standing between them and a quarter-final place tonight.
The National League side are four tiers below their Premier League opposition but they’ve already demonstrated their giant-killing capabilities with victories over AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth on their way to the fifth round.
The Hertfordshire club are chasing promotion to League Two and are eight points off the pace but their cup exploits mean they’ve three games in hand on the teams above them so there’s potentially a very exciting end of the season lying in wait.
Notably, they boast the best defensive record in the National League, conceding just 17 in 27 and have yet to concede a goal in their epic FA Cup run. At the other end they don’t score too many either though and their games average just 2.00 per game. That could point to a low scoring affair at Goodison.
But a lot will depend on how strong Frank Lampard goes with his line-up but his hands will be tied a little with January arrivals Dele Alli, Donny van de Beek and Anwar El Ghazi all cup-tied and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the treatment table.
As a player, Lampard lifted the trophy four times with Chelsea and he’d love nothing more than to get his hands on it as a manager. At 1/10 Everton are short favourites to take a step closer to Wembley but it might not be as straightforward as the price suggests.
Changes to the Everton line-up plus a stuffy, determined Boreham Wood side could mean it takes a while for the Toffees to break down stubborn opponents and no goal before 23 minutes pays 5/6 at Bet365.
