HUNGARY look like they could be England’s nearest challengers in World Cup qualifying Group I so a win tonight in Budapest could more or less clinch the group for Gareth Southgate’s men even at this early stage.
After the heartbreak of the summer the Three Lions must go again but they look too short to be backing at 2/5. The Hungarians showed up well at Euro 2020, drawing with France and Germany in the Group of Death. Only Portugal and Russia have defeated the Mighty Magyars since the start of 2020 – a run of 16 games.
England will most likely prevail but the Puskas Arena will be a tricky venue.
Iceland’s reign of Europe’s most successful underdogs looks under threat. They’ve won just three games since the start of 2020, against Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein and tonight’s opponents Romania.
In their defence, they’ve been the victims of their own success to a large extent. Oversucceeding has seen them lumped in with Europe’s top nations in the Nations League but defeat to Armenia in their last World Cup qualifier will have some alarm bells ringing in Rekjavik.
Opponents Romania haven’t fared much better lately, losing their last four. A disappointing run of results after some optimism following wins over Norway, North Macedonia and a draw in Northern Ireland.
The bookies don’t like they know which way to call this one, pricing Iceland at 8/5 and Romania at 17/10. Home advantage could be enough to swing it in favour of the Icelanders and we can buy some extra insurance by backing them in the draw no bet market at 10/11.
Elsewhere on Thursday, Albania will prove more difficult opponents for Poland than their 6/1 odds suggest. The Albanians have been steadily improving and topped their Nations League group. The Poles are winless in six including a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign. It’s hard to find an angle to here but Albania on the Asian Handicap +1.0 can be backed at 1.940.
Andorra should win the battle of the minnows at home to San Marino. And Italy will likely win by the standard 2-0 at home to Bulgaria. Add in a win for North Macedonia at home to Armenia for a 1.69/1 Treble.
