Tennis Betting: Novak Djokovic Very Much the Man to Beat at Wimbledon 2021 (28 June – 11 July)

20/06/2021 admin

The 2021 Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to commence on Monday 28 June and culminate on Sunday 11 July. Keep scrolling for the betting odds and our Wimbledon 2021 betting predictions & picks.

Last year’s tournament was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, so Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep are the defending singles champions from when the tournament was last held in 2019.

Wimbledon 2021 Betting Predictions:

  • Men’s Outright Winner: Novak Djokovic @ 20/21 with Betway
  • Men’s Outright e/w: Matteo Berrettini @ 25/1 with William Hill (1/2 odds 1,2)
  • Women’s Outright Winner: Ashleigh Barty @ 6/1 with Betfair
  • Women’s Outright e/w: Elina Svitolina @ 33/1 e/w with bet365* /(1/2 odds 1,2)

Wimbledon Men’s Preview

The tournament begins just two weeks after the end of the French Open and the shorter than usual turnaround was a significant factor in two-time Wimbledon champion (2008 and 2010) Rafael Nadal opting to pull out of this year’s championships, after saying that he needs to “recuperate after a long clay-court season”.

That has only strengthened Djokovic’s position as favourite at 20/21 with Betway as he bids for a sixth Wimbledon title and a 20th Grand Slam title overall, which would take him level with Roger Federer and Nadal.

The 34-year-old Djokovic has already won the Australian and French Open titles in 2021 and the Serbian world ranked no. 2 is the firm favourite to move to within touching distance of a calendar year Grand Slam of the major tournaments. He has an 84% win record on grass courts.

Other Wimbledon Contenders

Daniil Medvedev is seen as the greatest threat of the younger generation, but the 25-year-old Russian he’s never been beyond the 3rd round at the All England Club and his 64% win rate on grass is good, but not outstanding.

Medvedev was runner-up to Djokovic at the Australian Open this year though and he is 6/1 with bet365* to claim a first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was two sets to the good before losing the French open final to Djokovic, so he will have the mental scars as well as the physical demands of that tournament to overcome.

The 22-year-old Greek has only ever played one Wimbledon before this year and was eliminated in the 4th round on that occasion. Again, his record on grass isn’t especially impressive, with a 61% win rate.

However, he was also a semi-finalist at the Australian Open this year and is 6/1 with BoyleSports to win Wimbledon.

Roger & Out?

Perhaps the biggest threat to Djokovic could come from the 39-year-old eight-time Wimbledon champion, Roger Federer at 10/1 with Betfair.

He has an incredible 87% win record on grass, but he will be 40 in August. Can he turn back the clock one more time?

Other possible candidates for a tilt at the men’s title include Alexander Zverev at 12/1 with William Hill, big-serving Matteo Berrettini at 25/1 with William Hill (the Italian has an impressive 71% win rate on grass), Andrey Rublev is 40/1 with Betfair and Dominic Thiem can be backed at 40/1 with BoyleSports.

Outside Wimbledon Bets

At slightly bigger odds, you could back:

  • Nick Kyrgios at 50/1 with BoyleSports
  • Denis Shapovalov is 50/1 with Betway
  • Marin Cilic is 66/1 with Betway
  • Jannik Sinner is 66/1 with BoyleSports

For those of a patriotic nature, the injury-plagued Andy Murray is on offer at Wimbledon odds of 80/1 with BoyleSports.

Women’s Wimbledon Preview

There’s also been a high-profile withdrawal in the women’s event, with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka opting to take a break from tennis to spend time with her friends and family after experiencing depression and anxiety.

That’s left the current world ranked no. 1 player, Ashleigh Barty, as the 6/1 favourite with Betfair. The 25-year-old Australian has never been beyond the 4th round at Wimbledon and only has one Grand Slam title (the French Open in 2019) to her name.

On the plus side, Barty does possess an excellent 78% win ratio on grass courts and has three WTA titles to her name in 2021.

Ashleigh Barty remains on track for Wimbledon in 12 days but any tournament play before the grasscourt major remains highly unlikely for the world No.1. https://t.co/rEgMAin8hN

Next in the betting is 39-year-old Serena Williams at 8/1 with Betfair. Williams has amassed 23 Grand Slam titles (including seven at Wimbledon) in an illustrious career and has an 88% win rate on grass.

On the downside, she’s 40 in September and her last Grand Slam title was the Australian Open in January 2017.

A couple of former Wimbledon champions are next up in the betting, with Garbine Muguruza (2017 champion) at 10/1 with 888sport and Petra Kvitova (Wimbledon winner in 2011 and 2014) at 10/1 with William Hill.

Muguruza won the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this year (where she defeated the soon-to-be French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova in the final) and was also a finalist at the Yarra Valley Classic and Qatar Open in 2021.

It was Kvitova who actually beat Muguruza to win the 2021 Qatar Open but, despite a 74% win record on grass, she’s a risky punt given her ongoing injury issues.

Canada’s 21-year-old Bianca Andreescu is 11/1 with BoyleSports. She won the US Open in 2019, but has never been beyond the 1st round in her two appearances at Wimbledon and has had serious injury issues since her Grand Slam breakthrough.

The 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek is 12/1 with 888sport. The 20-year-old Pole has only ever played one match in the main draw at Wimbledon, a first round loss to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in 2019. That said, she did win the junior title the same year.

Other Leading Contenders

In a wide open market, other leading contenders in the Wimbledon betting include defending champion Halep at 12/1 with bet365*, Aryna Sabalenka at 14/1 with Betfair, Victoria Azarenka at 22/1 with Betway and Cori Gauff is 20/1 with Betfair.

The Ukrainian Elina Svitolina has been one of the most consistent players in women’s tennis in Grand Slam events over the past few years, having reached the quarter-final in all four tournaments, but yet to play in a final. She’s 33/1 with bet365.
