Day 15 in Qatar and we’re well under way at the last-16 stage. Favourites Argentina and the Netherlands booked their place in the quarter finals and it could be a similar story for the fancied sides today.
But before all that we take moment today to remember our good friend, the one and only Mr Fixit, Paul Jain, who we sadly lost two years ago. Paul would have loved the current football-fest at the World Cup although there’s absolutely no doubt he’d have favoured Clydebank’s 5-1 win Kilwinning Rangers yesterday to anything on offer in Qatar.
Paul is always in our thoughts, especially at this time of year. We miss him greatly. ❤️
On to today’s action in Qatar as four teams view for place in the quarter-finals. Two clear favourites to progress today are France (3/10) and England (8/15) against Poland and Senegal respectively.
A much-changed France side suffered a surprise defeat to Tunisia in their final match of Group D but qualification was already assured by that point and it’ll be a different animal that takes to the field in Doha this afternoon. Significantly Kylian Mbappe will be back in the starting line-up after a half-hour cameo on Wednesday as will a handful of others who started that match on the bench.
Opponents Poland squeezed through to the knock-out stages but haven’t really impressed so far. Lewandowski bring star quality to the side but his supporting cast fail to capture the imagination more often than not. The Poles usually come up short when faced with top tier opposition and this afternoon’s clash looks no different against the defending champions.
The aforementioned Mbappe will be the dangerman for France again and the 23-year-old is 21/20 to net his fourth goal of the tournament.
In the evening it’s England v Senegal in Al Khor. Already shorn of the talents of leader Sadio Mane, the Senegalese will miss Everton’s Idrissa Gueye’s influence in the middle of the park but they’ve still got quality and experience in their squad and shouldn’t be written off.
After a comfortable 3-0 win over Wales and coming through Group B unscathed, Gareth Southgate’s men look primed for the tougher tests that lie ahead. Confidence and expectaions are growing that this pride of Lions can make their mark in Qatar.
England have never lost to African opposition and while Senegal deserve every respect if this England side turn up they should good enough to progress.
It wouldn’t be surprise to see the African champions push them all the way. A win goal winning margin for either side appeals at 13/8.
The Lions of Teranga have already scored five goals in the competition and if there’s a weak link in this England sqaud it’s in defence so both teams to score is also attractive at 5/4.
Hwoever, in a tournament that’s had it’s fair share of surprises it’s time for the big guns to step up when it really matters and a France & England Double pays a tidy even money at Bet365.
